About Chicago

Chicago, otherwise known as the Windy City, is the largest city in the midwestern US state of Illinois. Located on the banks of Lake Michigan, Chicago is known for its vibrant nightlife and music scene, striking urban architecture, Wrigley Field and most importantly, Chicago-style deep dish pizza.

You’re in for a treat when it comes to our Chicago youth and backpackers hostels. They’re super modern with unique designs, excellent facilities, fantastic social atmospheres and that all-important free Wi-Fi. If you’re on a tight budget or travelling solo you’ll love those that offer amazing freebies like a killer breakfast, walking tours and group outings to events like local jazz nights. All of our Chicago youth hostels are excellently rated, so you can rest assured that they’re tried, tested and approved by veteran backpackers. Don't forget to check out our best Chicago hostels!

Our youth hostels in Chicago are spread out across the city, so you can choose the neighbourhood that’s best for you. The River North area is an entertainment hub, full of incredible restaurants and swanky bars. It also borders the ‘Magnificent Mile’, Chicago’s most famous shopping district where you’ll find some of the city’s most iconic architectural landmarks. The Wicker Park neighbourhood is where Chicago’s cool kids hang out thanks to an influx of coffee shops, brunch spots, record stores and vintage boutiques. The community spirit in Albany Park, Chicago’s most multicultural neighbourhood, is second to none – as is the range of incredible cuisines on offer in this foodie hotspot!

Chicago is home to the USA’s second largest public transport system, so getting around is a breeze. The L Train serves 144 stations, and for anywhere it doesn’t cover there are over 100 bus routes operating in the city. If you’ll be exploring the city lots, the best value option is to grab a 24-hour unlimited transit ticket for $10. Chicago O’Hare, the city’s main airport, is located 15 miles from Downtown. A train runs regularly 24 hours a day from O’Hare Blue Line Station to the city centre, taking around 45 minutes and costing $5.
