10 places that offer free WiFi in Budapest

There are many great things about hostels. One of them is that most of them offer free WiFi. The only thing is that taking advantage of it does mean staying in the hostel. If you’re planning a trip to Hungary and are wondering where you can get free WiFi in Budapest, here are 10 places where you can surf the net for free.

1. Cafe EATaliano, Andrassy ut. 41, open daily 11am-midnight.
This is just one of four Cafe EATaliano restaurants in Budapest. It’s by far the best for people watching, making it the perfect place to pop open your laptop and people watch at the same time.

2. McDonald’s, various locations, opening hours vary.
I won’t spend too much time on this one. We all know what they serve. Love them or hate them, most of them offer free WiFi now too.

3. Cafe Vian, 1061 Budapest, Liszt Ferenc ter 9, open daily 9am-1am.
I love this square. It’s the liveliest square in the city. I also love this restaurant. The fact that it’s the only one that doesn’t have hawkers outside trying to coax you in is a big plus point, as is the fact that it has free WiFi.

4. Szimpla Kert, Kazinczy ut. 14., open daily 12 noon-3am.
If you come here and jump on to your smartphone/laptop/iPad and use the free WiFi there’s something wrong with you. One of Budapest’s celebrated ‘ruin bars’, I’ve never been to a bar like this. Ever. I’m including it though as it’s good to know you’ll be able to check in with an image when you get here. For free.

5. Café de Paris, Vorssmarty tér 1, open daily 8am-5am.
Located in a square you’d expect to encounter in the US of A, Cafe de Paris is a large establishment with large prices to go with it. Still, the WiFi is free and the location is central.

6. Fogas Kert, Akácfa ut 49, open Mon-Sat 12 noon-4am, Sun 4pm-4am.
Now this is a ruin bar you could come to and relax with your laptop to write a few emails. On a week night anyway. It attracts a cool crowd and is close to many of the hostels in Budapest listed on the site.

7. Starbucks, various locations
See McDonald’s.

8. Osbudavar Pizzeria, Országház utca 10, open daily 11am-10pm.
If there was one area you could say was Budapest’s ‘touristy area’, Castle Hill would be it. This restaurant is a surprisingly good pizzeria and has free WiFi if you want to Instagram your pizza before demolishing it.

9. California Coffee, various locations, opening 7am/7.30am-11pm/11.30pm.
Part of a chain, this is the closest thing to a Hungarian Budapest Starbucks that you’ll find. Upon purchase of a product, your receipt has a username and password that will get you online for 90 minutes. We used some of those 90 minutes in their branch at St Stephen’s Basilica, but they’ve coffee shops on Kálvin tér and Budaörsi útca also.

10. Cru Cafe, Zrinyi ut. 16, open Sun-Fri 9am-midnight, Sat 9am-3am.
If you’re looking for a coffee while taking in a breathtaking view of St Stephen’s Basilica at the same time, drop into Cru Cafe. Staff are friendly too. Thanks to DJs it gets going at the weekends also.
