6 stunning Star Wars filming locations you can actually visit

Some have been waiting since the seventies. Others have been hoping for redemption after the release of the not so popular prequels. But finally, the new Star Wars film is upon us! Thankfully however, you don’t have to travel to a galaxy far, far away to immerse yourself in the world of the force. You can visit the movie’s locations all over the world! Here are some of the locations used in the film with their nearby hostels…

Skellig Michael, Ireland

The beautiful green island off the coast of Ireland are definitely out of this world. It was once home to a Christian monastery, but has been unoccupied since the twelfth century. The island is remote, peaceful, and the ruins of the monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The closest hostel, The Skellig Lodge is simply phenomenal. With a guest rating of 10/10 for security, staff and cleanliness, so you’re definitely in good hands.

The hostel overlooks the beautiful Ballinskelligs Bay and is just five minutes walking distance from the beach. It’s modern, with all the usual trimmings, and even a self-catering kitchen. If you’re feeling adventurous you’ll have all the hiking, swimming, diving, surfing, and kayaking that you could ever want right at your fingertips. Of course there are regular boat trips to Skellig Michael, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to unleash your inner Star Wars geek!

Continuing our theme of beautiful remote locations, next up is Mývatn Lake in Iceland. Like most of the other locations used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the area is visually stunning, wonderfully serene and full of peaceful wildlife. Krafla is a volcano in the Mývatn, and provides quite the background for your Instagram pics!

One of the best hostels in Iceland is the awesome Akureyri Backpackers. The amazing staff and fantastic location (9.5 guest rating) will make sure you get out to spend some time in tranquil Icelandic nature. Be sure to ask the staff for their local insider information on the best spots for food and entertainment for when you’re not visiting Star Wars locations!

RAF Base, Greenham Common, UK

The Royal Air Force base in picturesque Berkshire was used for what most believe will be the Resistance fighters’ base, was used for fifty years as an actual base for British and American military. While it is not currently being used for combat purposes, it’s setting in the rolling English hills makes it a striking contrast to the visuals provided by Icelandic volcanoes and remote Irish islands. It is now used as public parkland.

Nearby is Hillingdon Prince, which may be a little pricier than a bare bones hostel, but the quality of facilities and location more than make up for the slight increase in price. Free Wi-Fi of course, a gym and daily breakfasts mean you’ll be well taken care of. The rooms even come with microwaves and fridges!

Forest of Dean

Another lusciously green British location, Forest of Dean makes the perfect setting for some new lightsabre duels. The region is the second largest crown forest in England, and has been a historic site in the countryside since the Romans walked on British soil.

North West England is home to one of the most beautiful locations in the world, let alone to be used in a Star Wars film! The Lake District is named for good reason, with 21 large lakes, and plenty of peaks, forest and open skies to help clear your mind of stress. The area is actually a National Park, and as one of the most visited spots in all of the country (for good reason) has inspired countless works of art and poetry.

The YHA Ambleside hostel is located right in the heart of the Lake District, and has recently been refurbished. With all the normal amenities and even a vibrating pillow alarm, it’s clear why guest ratings are so high.

Tunisia

The earthly location of the famous early Star Wars planet Tatooine, home of Luke Skywaker, is found across different parts of Tunisia. The hot, sandy climate will transport you to that galaxy far, far away, but you can also get some quality rest at Le Pacha Hotel, located at the heart of Tunis.

While it’s technically called a ‘hotel,’ you certainly get amazing facilities and prime location in the city for affordable/hostel prices! Best of all, breakfast is included in the price, you can feel ready to explore the various star wars tours/locations in the Tunisian desert.
