Last Saturday, as part of the 3-day trip I was doing with Tekweni Ecotours, I went on a boat trip on the St Lucia Lake. It’s part of the St Lucia Wetland Park, which was the first place in South Africa to become a World Heritage listed site.

Before last Friday (12th February) I’d never been on a ‘game drive’ (safari) around a ‘game reserve’ before. For those of you unaware of what that is, it’s where you get into a 4x4 vehicle and go driving in a reserve.

I was lucky enough to find out the answer to that question last night at Albergo for Backpackers when Leslie and Mirjam invited me to a South African style barbecue. They light a fire at the hostel every night which guests are free to use.

Along with Nina from Albergo for Backpackers, I walked from the elephant sanctuary to Monkeyland where I met Lara. She’s the marketing manager for both Monkeyland and Birds of Eden.

Yesterday if someone had asked me what I did in work that day, I would have answered that I: a) took an elephant for a walk, b) observed many monkeys and birds, c) saw grown-ups try to call a cheetah as if it was a domestic cat and more besides.
