The earthquake which took place on Tuesday afternoon in Christchurch, New Zealand has sadly, at time of writing, taken 75 lives. Unfortunately this figure looks set to rise. As Christchurch is such a popular stop on the backpacking route for travellers, you may know somebody who was there on Tuesday, or you may have plans to travel there in the future. Last night at round 12.30am I noticed a tweet in my Twitter feed by @backpackingmatt, a travel blogger based in Queenstown, New Zealand. It read ‘Just felt another big aftershock in Queenstown’. Then I began to notice other tweets reporting on the earthquake. It seemed that just over five months since the first earthquake back in September 2010, Christchurch was hit again.
