My first visit to Paris was for what is probably the biggest annual celebration the city holds – Bastille Day. This is a really popular time for visitors to come to Paris as they get to enjoy a parade, a free concert and some breathtaking fireworks. And as it is a national holiday, all the locals come out to take part in the celebrations too.

Here’s what you can expect from Bastille Day in Paris...

    An early start...

Get up early and make your way to the Champs-Élysées, the parade starts at 10am and you have to be in early to get a good vantage point.

    Lot’s of uniforms...

It’s a military parade so don’t expect colourful floats or dancers. It’s all army tanks and military horses.

    A picnic in white...

The park in the Palace of Versailles is the setting for one of two big picnics in Paris for Bastille Day along the banks of the Grand Canal. The dress code is white and many people dress up pretty spectacular for the occasion.

    A free concert...

The Champs de Mar hosts a free concert for the day with some great French and International acts taking to the stage.

    Another giant picnic...

Bring a packed lunch to the Champs de Mar too and maybe some wine (no glass is allowed into the venue). Pick a spot in the grass to take in the concert and relax for the day.

The Eiffel Tower in a new light...

A breathtaking fireworks display takes place behind the Eiffel Tower from 10.45pm. But you'll have to get there a few hours earlier to get a good viewing spot.
