Will you be visiting London at the start of June? You couldn't have picked a better weekend to descend on the English capital as it is The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend. It's also called The Central Weekend and it takes place across the UK from June 2nd to 5th 2012. This weekend is to mark 60 years of The Queen’s reign and there will be many events and parties to celebrate Jubilee Weekend, particularly in London. It's also a four day weekend in the UK as the May Bank Holiday is being moved a week forward for the Jubilee holiday. Below we take a look at what you can expect to find happening in and around London and across the UK for this momentous weekend.
Jubilee Weekend Events - Saturday June 2nd
The Queen will start her weekend celebrations with a trip to the Epsom Derby at the Epsom Downs Racecourse. Horse-racing is one of the Queen’s favourite sports and the Royal Family will be in attendance along with some very fashionable hats.
If you’re not one for horse-racing then make your way to Hyde Park for the Jubilee Family Festival which takes place both on Saturday and Sunday. It runs from 10.30am to 7.30pm both days and promises to be a great day for all the family. There’s live entertainment, cartoon entertainers, parades and much more. Tickets are £20 for adults and £12.50 for kids.
Jubilee Weekend Events - Sunday June 3rd
Day 2 of Jubilee Weekend will see The Big Jubilee Lunch take place around London and the rest of the UK too. This event is all about encouraging people to share their lunch with friends and neighbours. This will see lots of picnics in parks and gardens, as well as traditional street party’s.
Also on the Sunday the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant takes place on London’s famous river. This will see up to 1,000 boats from across the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world assembled along the River Thames. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will travel in the Royal Barge which will be the centrepiece of this event.
Jubilee Weekend Events - Monday June 4th
Monday will see a BBC Concert at Buckingham Palace that will also be televised if you’re not lucky enough to make it to London. Tickets are available for this through a public ballot and are available for UK residents only. The concert will be staged around the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of the palace. Artists performing include Shirley Bassey, Elton John, Tom Jones, Lang Lang, Madness, Paul McCartney and many more.
There’s also the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Beacons which sees 2,012 Beacons being lit by communities and people throughout the UK, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth.
Jubilee Weekend Events - Tuesday June 5th
Tuesday sees the final day of Queens Jubilee 2012 with a day packed full of celebrations in central London. There will be a service at St Paul’s Cathedral followed by two receptions, a lunch at Westminster Hall, a Carriage Procession to Buckingham Palace and finally a Balcony appearance and Flypast. A great finish to what promises to be an entertaining weekend in London, and indeed across the UK.
