I’d been told before arriving in Chicago that I had to try two things – deep dish pizza and a ‘Chicago-style’ hot dog. I haven’t tried the former yet but last night I did try the latter...
So what’s in a Chicago-style hot dog? Apart from the obvious ingredients of a sausage, ketchup, mustard and a bun, there are a few extras. These are diced onions, pickle, tomatoes, cucumber, chilli and lettuce. Yum.
Thanks to the recommendation from @whereishawkins, a travel guy on Twitter, I went to Portillo’s in the Near North End part of the city. While it was extremely tasty, the restaurant was a lot bigger than I expected. I was expecting something far smaller. Funnily enough, I was expecting the hot dog to be bigger. But it was good all the same. Make sure to try one when you’re here.
