Ottawa is home to a huge selection of restaurants serving up all kinds of food, and today I checked out two of the places recommended to me by the staff here at HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel.
At lunchtime I went to Chez Lucien, which is located on Murray Street not far from Ottawa’s stunning Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica. This restaurant and bar is popular with a crowd of locals who come for the delicious, reasonably priced food.
On the menu you’ll find everything from steak to sandwiches. Today I had a croque-monsieur, which came with both salad and fries. The atmosphere is really laid back and friendly, a really great place for enjoying a relaxing lunch while sitting at one of the tables at the window out front.
Then, following an afternoon of exploring Ottawa, I decided to check out Ahora, a much-loved Mexican restaurant located close to the ByWard Market on Dalhousie. It’s a basement level restaurant, so you have to keep an eye out for the sign leading the way down.
It looked pretty quiet from up top this evening but once I descended the stairs I realised it was almost entirely full. I headed up to the counter and ordered a quesadilla with tortilla chips on the side then took my seat and waited for the food to arrive.
The portions here are huge and the prices are really affordable. Instead of a salad bar, Ahora has a salsa bar. The salsas range from very mild to very hot, and you can try as much of each of them as you want with your meal, which I thought was a really great idea.
First thing tomorrow morning, I’m heading to the city’s famous Parliament Hill and after that, I’m sure I’ll be able to find plenty more to fill up my last full day in Ottawa.
