Five reasons to...party on a beach

    Jun142010

With summer approaching, it’s once again time to lather on some sun block, grab a cooler filled with food and drink, and make your way to the nearest beach to catch some rays. However, for those with a thirst for revelry that can’t be filled by your average day on the shore, Hostelworld.com has listed five of the craziest beach parties on the planet.

In this month's "5 on 5", we explore some of the most decadent and debaucherous beach destinations across the globe.

Haad Rin Beach, Koh Phangan, Thailand (Full Moon Beach Party)

Once a month, madness takes hold at Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phangan, Thailand when travelers from all around the world flock to this pristine, white-sand beach for the Full Moon Beach Party. One of the longest running beach parties in the world, this night of lunar lunacy attracts up to 30,000 maniacal party goers, and has developed a tremendous cult following with entertainment featuring DJs, dancers, fireworks, fire-eaters and jugglers. Just be sure not to drink the Kool-Aid!

Coca-Cola Beach, South Padre Island, Texas, United States

Coca-Cola Beach at South Padre Island, Texas, sponsored by the soda company, is an annual hot spot for spring breakers across the U.S. With tens of thousands of frenzied college students converging on the tiny island each spring, it has developed into a wild and decadent party. And since the beach is only a stone’s throw from the Mexico, those with a penchant for tequila-infused debauchery can cross the border to get their fill.

    Anjuna Beach, Goa, India

Sitting between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, this focal point of the Goan coast sees two million visitors annually. With a backdrop of swaying palms, white sands and sparkling waters and offering delicious east-meets-west cuisine, this Indian beach party destination is rapidly becoming a favorite on the world “party scene”. Originally a destination for the hippie crowd, Goa now attracts a well-rounded group of visitors that flock to the beach destination’s wild trance parties that last from sunset to midnight. The coastline also boasts many reasonably priced “discos” and restaurants for the party-goer looking to save a buck or two, but not skimp on the fun.

    Paradise Beach, Mykonos, Greece

Long considered the best party island in Greece, Mykonos – think Ibiza on a budget - is a great destination for the party-goer who doesn’t want to shell out a lot of cash, but still wants to experience a bit of luxury and “be seen” among the purveyors of cool. Once on Mykonos, head straight to Paradise Beach, but don’t expect peace and quiet along the sandy shore. During the day, visitors party at the beach bar, water sports center and diving center. At night, Paradise Beach transforms into a massive club on the sand with throngs of party people dancing atop tables until sunrise!

    Magnetic Island, Australia

Since 2004, Base Magnetic Isand hostel has been sponsoring Australia's answer to Koh Phangan, with lavish Full Moon monthly parties on the beach at Magnetic Island. Each event attracts up to 2000 people to groove to tunes on the sand, creating an open air heaving mass of bodies that dances until the sun comes up. In addition to featuring international and local DJ’s, Magnetic Island has attracted some huge music acts, including Krafty Kuts, Mark Dynamix, Benny Benassi, Martin Solveig, Hed Kandi, TV Rock and Potbelleez.
