Inter railing around Europe was a life-changing experience. I found it to be like a sort of traveller's Pandora Box with a colourful array of different and notable things contained within - attractions, restaurants, tours, parks, museums and sights all for you to experience and explore. Like in the Pandora's Box myth however, there is an important cautionary element to note in relation to such a trip. It would be unwise not to think and plan before considering such a holiday, and I learnt there are some very practical dos and don'ts with journeys like this. But using my top ten tips, your European inter rail trip should flow that little bit smoother...

Hostels are great for many reasons. One of these is price – they’re a lot cheaper than hotels. They don’t offer some of the perks a hotel offers though, so when packing for them you'll need to bring along a few more items and be mindful of how you pack them.

Are you really travelling solo when you take a group tour? Some people say no but I say yes. At least, now I do. Until last month, I was an independent solo traveller. And yes, I was a bit of a snob about it. I thought independent travel was much, much better than going in a group.

In Southeast Asia, you’ll find a heavily trodden tourist trail with many things to do, places to see and parties to attend. Since the hippies first made their way through here in the 1970s, Southeast Asia has been a mecca for budget travellers and backpackers alike. With its warm weather, good food, gorgeous beaches, and relative cheapness, there’s a reason why the place has remained a travel mainstay for over 40 years.

While Southern and Eastern Africa are much more famous for potential wildlife experiences, West Africa is largely overlooked. From primates to crocs, to forest and savannah elephants, there are plenty of animal experiences here in the region.
