If you’re planning a trip to Ireland and fancy staying in something a bit different, check out some of the more unique Irish hostels listed on Hostelworld.com.
Gyreum, Sligo, Ireland
Stuck at the end of the plateau of Moytura in Ireland’s Co. Sligo, ‘Gyreum’ is a hugely spacious, hobbit-like building that has been dug into the hillside. The 100ft structure is aligned to the dawns and dusks of both the summer and winter solstices when beams of sunlight light up the central hall. Guests can stay in dorms circling the ‘round hall’ which is perfect for yoga and meditation.
Shiplake Mountain Hostel, Dunmanway, Cork, Ireland
In this hostel in West Cork guests can stay in a charming, stone-built, traditional farmhouse or in one of the gypsy barrel-top caravans. Both enjoy amazing locations, nestled in a superb setting on the foothills of the Sheehy Mountains. Just 30km from the south-west coast, this hostel is a true paradise for walkers, cyclists, and other lovers of the great outdoors.
Doorus House Hostel, Kinvara, Co. Galway
This historic building was built by the Count DeBasterot in 1866. In September 1897 WB Yeats, Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn met with the Count here to start the Irish National (Abbey) Theatre. The Count’s home became a youth hostel in 1961.
MacMurrough Farm Hostel, New Ross, Co Wexford
Near the town of New Ross, MacMurrough Farm Hostel is located on a ‘sheep and tillage farm’ in south west Wexford. It has been skilfully restored so as to retain its character and charm. Guests can stay in private rooms in an unusual cottage which overlooks the patio where the sheep graze or in a separate, self-catered cottage that has dormitory accommodation.
Dun Chaoin Hostel, Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry
Situated on the Dingle Way, this hostel is located in Kerry’s Gaeltacht area and boasts panoramic views. From the hostel you can enjoy views of the Blasket Islands and the Atlantic Ocean. But what makes this hostel unique is that it is the most westerly hostel in Europe.
Foulksrath Castle, Jenkinstown, Kilkenny
Thanks to its location in a 16th century castle, Foulksrath Castle is one of the most spectacular hostels in Ireland. Located just 5km outside Kilkenny, it was built by the Purcell family. The dorms are located up a spiralling staircase and out the rooms’ windows are great views of the surrounding grounds. Guests who stay here can enjoy eating in the castle’s most ornate room, a magnificent dining room.
