Melbourne may not be as well known for its beaches as Sydney is, but if the sun is shining there's one place that people flock to in the Victorian capital - St Kilda Beach. Obviously they didn't flock on this particular day (skies were blue but it was still a bit chilly), but you can see from this shot that it's a golden beach that begs you to sunbath.
Ask any traveller on the way to Melbourne on a working-holiday where they might be living and more frequently than not you'll hear the suburb of St Kilda mentioned. Apart from the above beach which is obviously a big draw, it's a cool neighbourhood with loads of bars, cafés and restaurants. Many of these are on its main thoroughfare, Acland St. It's also full of lots of travellers from all over the world, so it's a great place to meet people.
If you're in the process of moving to Australia and are thinking of making Melbourne your home then you may want to make this famous suburb your home. If you're just visiting then you may want to make it your base. We've lots of hostels in Melbourne near there to choose from, plus we've a free pocket guide, podcast and more to give you a taste of what to expect there.
In our hostelworld.com travel blog we bring you all the latest company news and information on new additions to the site including podcasts, videos and more. You'll also get inside information on a variety of destinations across the globe as they're visited by our travel editor and writers.
