Last June I visited a travel blogging conference in Keystone, Colorado. I’d never been to that part of the States before, but I’m glad that this conference triggered my first visit. Last month one of the team, Feargal, left Hostelworld Headquarters en route to France. It was here that he would begin a cycle covering over 600km in six day which was in aid of a very, very good cause - the Special Olympics. Over the six days Feargal and the rest of the team (there were 22 people in total) would pass through the French capital along with smaller destinations such as Orange, while some would tackle a 3,000m climb up the Mont Ventoux route.

Cycling from Paris to Nice in aid of a good cause

Last Saturday one of the members of our team, Feargal, set off on a six-day adventure in aid of a very, very good cause - the Special Olympics and other charities. Covering over 100km a day, so far they have passed through Orange, Aix-en Province and tackled a 3,000m climb up the Mont Ventoux route. Still to come are cycles to Draguignan before it all comes to an end in Nice.

Our photo of the day is of a not so shy giraffe in Hluhluwe Game Reserve just outside Durban in South Africa. Taken at around midday, the day began way before that at 5am. It's when you've the best chance of seeing the 'Big 5' - rhino, buffalo, lion, elephant and leopard. We saw four of the five that weekend, but missing one didn't leave disappointed. Along with the giraffe in this shot I saw zebra, hyena and more.

Something I end up doing everywhere I go is walking. Whether it be on a trail to Machu Picchu or from block to block in Manhattan, I always end up doing lots of it when on the road. This isn’t a bad thing of course – you get to see much more this way than by using public transport. Some of my favourite walks are in the UK, and in this weekend’s Telegraph newspaper there’s a free supplement outlining fifty of the best ones.

It’s one of many possible stops along the hugely popular Garden Route. I’d definitely recommend you check it out. One of the best ways to see the Riga is to head up to the Skyline bar at the top of the Reval Hotel Latvija on Elizabetes street. Not only does the bar boast pretty incredible views of the city, it also serves up a colourful selection of cocktails in comfy surroundings. It’s a great spot to go and watch the sun set over the city, then watch as Riga lights up at night.

One thing I love about Paris is that, if you plan your trip around the first Sunday of the month, you'll save yourself a lot of money as all the main museums are free. This includes the Louvre and Museé d'Orsay. Thankfully, a similar initiative began in Ireland yesterday as, as of from Wednesday July 6th, all heritage sites managed by the Office of Public Works are free on the first Wednesday of the month.

I really enjoyed my visit to Pretoria in South Africa’s northern Gauteng Province. The locals are friendly, the attractions are a lot of fun and there’s a great selection of places to eat and drink. Chinatown is probably my second favourite neighbourhood in Liverpool, after Lark Lane. Like Lark Lane, it’s filled with affordable restaurants selling delicious food. One of my favourites has to be Tokyou, a cool little noodle bar that attracts a great mix of visitors and locals with its tasty dishes, large portions and cheap prices.

Maybe I'm wrong, but as famous as Tokyo is, it doesn't have one iconic landmark that so many other cities have. There's no Eiffel Tower, no Opera House or no Statue of Liberty. If I was pressed to pick one landmark which is more recognisable than any other, it would have to Shibuya Crossing, the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world.

I love Copenhagen, from the Little Mermaid to the funky free town of Christiania. There’s so much to see and do while you’re there. You can check out Hans Christian Andersen’s grave in the Assistens Cemetery or sample tasty local favourites at the sausage stands. You can also stroll through Nyhavn, which might be a touristy area, but is popular for a reason, and on sunny days you’ll find plenty of locals hanging out there down by the water.

The live music scene in Glasgow is incredible, thanks to a great mix of home grown talent and top bands from all over the world. Three of my favourite places to go to concerts in Glasgow are the O2 Academy, the Garage and the SECC.

This is largely due to discovering new shops where I could spend hours and hours, and hundreds and hundreds of dollars. In Sydney, many of these shops are found on Pitt Street, a pedestrianised street in the middle of the CBD (Central Business District).

FCO in the UK deem Tokyo safe to travel to

We were all horrified by the images we saw on television on March 11th from Japan as an earthquake and ensuing tsunami caused utter devastation to the north east of Japan and other areas too. Even Tokyo, some 365 kilometres from Sendai (one of the worst affected cities) felt the force of the quake. But thankfully, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK no longer advise against travel to the Japanese capital.

A couple of years ago I remember hearing from friends that getting into dance clubs in the extremely hip Miami, a city famed for its beautiful people, was notoriously difficult. The burly doormen of these chic and trendy clubs, most of which are found in South Beach, would look you up and down before deciding whether or not you fitted in with the type of person they wanted frequenting their club.

One neighbourhood I’ve heard of over and over in Washington DC is Georgetown. I was told it’s a quaint neighbourhood with a small-town feel to it. Last night I went to check it out and it didn’t disappoint.

Today was culture day. No doubt about it. I visited The National Mall in Washington DC for one reason and for one reason only – it’s where the museums are. And good news for you, the budget traveller – they’re all free.

A flight of beer – my very first one

Today, along with Mark and Ray from HI Washington (Danny actually works in head office but came in to say hi), I had my very first ‘flight of beer’. So what’s a flight of beer you ask? Well, it’s simple. It’s a selection of beers served in tumbler style glasses, almost shots. But they’re not shooters. They’re meant to be tasted, you see.

Adams Morgan in Washington DC – where it’s at

Last night I visited a neighbourhood called Adams Morgan. It’s north of Downtown Washington where I am and is home to lots of bars. Getting there is a tiny bit troublesome as, while it has its own metro stop, it is a decent walk away from the heart of the action. This is at the intersection of 18th and Colombia Ave.

Yesterday morning I visited the first of what will be many museums here in Washington DC. This was the National Building Museum. Like most of the ‘big’ museums in DC, it’s free. And also, like most of the ‘big’ museums in DC, there’s a lot to cover.

Last night I visited the Dupont Circle neighbourhood, as I’ve been assured it’s one of the best in the city. The red line goes there and there’s a stop near HI Washington where I’m staying so it’s easy to get to.

I didn’t manage to call around to the President of the United States last night. Instead I decided to see what nightlife in Washington DC was like. Around the downtown area it’s pretty quiet from what I could see, but I did find one bar with a lot of beers.

Last night wasn’t as hectic as Friday night, but I’d a good night all the same. I met up with my friend Joanna who works in a bar down off Wall Street – the Full Shilling. From there we went to a bar where another friend works – the Sixth Ward. It’s over on the Lower East Side.

My first train ride in the US of A

To round off checking out the main attractions in Hamburg, I went to visit the Tierpark Hagenbeck and the Tropical Aquarium Hagenbeck. Both the zoo and the aquarium are on the same site, which can be reached by U-Bahn in about 20 minutes from the city centre.

Yesterday, after spending most of the afternoon getting footage for a new video which will be available on the site soon, I’d a great catch up with my friend. Hadn’t seen him in a long time. Really enjoyed it. We started in his bar called the Carlow on 84th and Lexington before going downtown to a bar around the 30s.
