Georgetown – one of DC’s prettier neighbourhoods

    Sep102010

One neighbourhood I’ve heard of over and over in Washington DC is Georgetown. I was told it’s a quaint neighbourhood with a small-town feel to it. Last night I went to check it out and it didn’t disappoint.

    Sep102010

If art, history or space aren’t your thing, don’t fret because there are some alternative museums here in Washington DC. The only thing though is that they’re not free like the others.

    Washington podcast – check

    Sep102010

Yesterday I returned to the Smithsonian American Art Gallery on F Street to meet Chris Geikel, press officer for Destination DC. I met him in the courtyard which is actually connected to the National Portrait Gallery which is part of the museum.

Adams Morgan in Washington DC – where it’s at

    Sep092010

Last night I visited a neighbourhood called Adams Morgan. It’s north of Downtown Washington where I am and is home to lots of bars. Getting there is a tiny bit troublesome as, while it has its own metro stop, it is a decent walk away from the heart of the action. This is at the intersection of 18th and Colombia Ave.

A flight of beer – my very first one

    Sep092010

Today, along with Mark and Ray from HI Washington (Danny actually works in head office but came in to say hi), I had my very first ‘flight of beer’. So what’s a flight of beer you ask? Well, it’s simple. It’s a selection of beers served in tumbler style glasses, almost shots. But they’re not shooters. They’re meant to be tasted, you see.

The National Mall in Washington DC – where you’ll find the (free) museums

    Sep092010

Today was culture day. No doubt about it. I visited The National Mall in Washington DC for one reason and for one reason only – it’s where the museums are. And good news for you, the budget traveller – they’re all free.

Going out in Washington DC – quiet on a Tuesday

    Sep082010

Last night I visited the Dupont Circle neighbourhood, as I’ve been assured it’s one of the best in the city. The red line goes there and there’s a stop near HI Washington where I’m staying so it’s easy to get to.

Free museums in Washington DC – the Smithsonians

    Sep082010

The American capital is different to other cities in the States because there are lots of free museums in Washington DC. I visited another of these yesterday afternoon – the Smithsonian American Art Museum which also incorporates the National Portrait Gallery.

Ben’s Chili Bowl – a Washington Institution (plus lots of culture)

    Sep082010

Yesterday morning I visited the first of what will be many museums here in Washington DC. This was the National Building Museum. Like most of the ‘big’ museums in DC, it’s free. And also, like most of the ‘big’ museums in DC, there’s a lot to cover.

Eating out in Washington DC – a visit to Chinatown

    Sep072010

Not far from HI Washington where I’m staying is Chinatown. And I’ve been told that if I’m looking for places good for eating out in Washington DC then I should set my sights there.
