One neighbourhood I’ve heard of over and over in Washington DC is Georgetown. I was told it’s a quaint neighbourhood with a small-town feel to it. Last night I went to check it out and it didn’t disappoint.

If art, history or space aren’t your thing, don’t fret because there are some alternative museums here in Washington DC. The only thing though is that they’re not free like the others.

Yesterday I returned to the Smithsonian American Art Gallery on F Street to meet Chris Geikel, press officer for Destination DC. I met him in the courtyard which is actually connected to the National Portrait Gallery which is part of the museum.

Last night I visited a neighbourhood called Adams Morgan. It’s north of Downtown Washington where I am and is home to lots of bars. Getting there is a tiny bit troublesome as, while it has its own metro stop, it is a decent walk away from the heart of the action. This is at the intersection of 18th and Colombia Ave.

Today, along with Mark and Ray from HI Washington (Danny actually works in head office but came in to say hi), I had my very first ‘flight of beer’. So what’s a flight of beer you ask? Well, it’s simple. It’s a selection of beers served in tumbler style glasses, almost shots. But they’re not shooters. They’re meant to be tasted, you see.

Today was culture day. No doubt about it. I visited The National Mall in Washington DC for one reason and for one reason only – it’s where the museums are. And good news for you, the budget traveller – they’re all free.

Last night I visited the Dupont Circle neighbourhood, as I’ve been assured it’s one of the best in the city. The red line goes there and there’s a stop near HI Washington where I’m staying so it’s easy to get to.

The American capital is different to other cities in the States because there are lots of free museums in Washington DC. I visited another of these yesterday afternoon – the Smithsonian American Art Museum which also incorporates the National Portrait Gallery.

Yesterday morning I visited the first of what will be many museums here in Washington DC. This was the National Building Museum. Like most of the ‘big’ museums in DC, it’s free. And also, like most of the ‘big’ museums in DC, there’s a lot to cover.
