I never made it to Greenside for something to eat. Soon after I finished updating my blog last Tuesday evening the heavens opened. They opened BIG TIME! To say there was a storm is an understatement.
Instead I did make it into Greenside for something to eat yesterday afternoon. I ate in a restaurant called Mamma’s Shebeen under the recommendation of Mama Fefe and everybody else in Johannesburg Backpackers. I’m happy to report that it was very tasty. It’s a restaurant that does its best to replicate what a ‘shebeen’ in township is like. A shebeen is a tavern-like place where people can buy food and drink.
Not sure if you can tell from the picture, but I went for a lamb stew. It came with vegetables and a ‘starch’ of your choice. One of these was rice but I went for ‘bop’. The stew itself was mixed with a perfect amount of mint and the meat was very tender. Check it out if you’re in the area here in Jo’burg.
