Staying in Mexico City?
Submitted By: PiperWells @ 07:29 2nd Jun 07
So I have been through all the listings for Mexico city here and on many other sites. I've gone directly to the hostels/hotel sites when avalaible. In other words I've been trying to do my homework but I also know that you can never really be sure until you're there. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to stay in Mexico City, budget, safe enough and quite enough? We were intitally thinking Hostel Amigo because it's cheap but neither my buddy or I really want to have to worry about the apparent noise that seems to be mentioned even when the traveler loved the place. We're too old for the party scene Okay, so we aren't but we've already done enough of that stuff in years past. We aren't going to Mexico to destroy our bodies and minds, though we'll probably have a night or two of that but no more. We want to see everything, which is always the case but never happens so... I don't know how much of a consern location is other than it's near some stuff and in, again, a safe enough neighborhood. We don't want to be an hour away from everything. We also would kind of rather have our own room together, two beds, his boyfriend might beat me up otherwise. (okay, not really, I don't have the same parts so there's no threat) I've done some more looking after our decision to find something a little more our speed and perhaps El Cenote Azul? It's a little further south than we wanted but again it falls on price and there are some things down there we wanted to check out. Any thoughts on that one? Also, while I'm at it, if anyone has a must see/do in Mexico, keeping in mind what little I have said about my friend and I... Thanks.

Shalom Hostel, Puerto Escondido .Avoid

This is a sub standard hostel offering poor value for a so called budget accommodation. It has exploited its status as the only budget accommodation right next to the Carrizalillo beach but just 10 minutes walk away or a short $2 cab ride you get far more for your money.Just walk around and haggle a bit. The owners demand a deposit and will not reimburse if you cancel (even as little as 2 hours after booking)or shorten your planned stay. The latter is likely to happen once you see how uncomfortable, dirty and hot the rooms are. To add insult to injury (loss of deposits and bug bites), the staff will ridicule you if you try to speak Spanish despite their own English being limited. This is the worst Hostel I have experienced anywhere (northAmerica,Australia,NZ,Asia - anywhere!!). Puerta Escondido is a lovely place to visit with something for everyone as they say.Don't spoil the experience by staying in this place.

Bad Hostel at South Miami beach
Submitted By: nickeswede73 @ 11:19 5th Jan 06
I stayed at The Tropics Hotel and Hostel in south Miami Beach for some weeks ago. In my bed I was severely bitten by bedbugs one night. The staff blamed it on mosquitoes but that was just a lie, other travellers confirmed it was bedbugs. I heard from one American traveller that they had a bedbug problem for years in my room, when I left the room the guy after me also got bitten! I didn’t get any refund or nothing from the hostel. When I asked for the manager he was “on holiday” and couldn’t be reached. Niklas, Sweden
