I was over in Italy in Spetmeber last year in Sorrento for a week and hired a car for the week. In hinsight while its the most comfortable way to get around some of the cliff top roads are so dangerous and narrow that a motorbike or moped would have been the ideal way to do it.

best thing to do i reckon is to get on a Contiki tour or something similar, cuz then you can see it all. these coach tours are usually young and funky-not old granny. Then you can stay on afterwards and use the trains. if you get a eurorail pass from an independant travel agent, you could even train it back to england and save on a flight.that way you`ll see all the major sights (which are cool) and discover italy for yourself-stumbling upon things is the best way. May and June are awesome months to go, as it gets expensive in the peak of summer.

I just got back from Italy and next time I'm definately renting a scooter. It seems daunting at first, but once I caught on to the fact that no one was trying to run anyone down, (like in London) it seems like the best way.
I think I would take the train between large cities, then rent a scooter to get around in, and then out of the cities.
The traffic seems crazy but no one drives fast enough for it to be really scary.
Hope that helps

We had a Eurail pass for 8 days. It was awesome - all the places we had previously booked with Hostelworld so knew which busses to catch once we got to our destination - most, if not all, busses were by the train station anyway. The trains in Italy are the cheapest in Europe and we had no hassles whatsoever, always on time, always there, easy to get on and off. So many trains going to the same place, you can never really miss one!!

I agree with Liz. Buy yourself a railpass of somesort. If it is only Italy you are interested in then just buy a rail pass specifically for Italy. Make sure and visit Florence. I lived there for six months and I had a great time. Cool bars to visit include the Red Garter and the Lion's Den. I even think that there are hostels around them to stay at. Both are located in downtown. The Duomo by achitect Flippo Brunelesci (did I spell it right?) is a must see as is the Piazza Vecchio. And then who would want to miss the David right? If you want to have fun and warp back to the Renaissance, this city can explain practically 200 years of history to you. Seeing is understanding.

I'll be flying from London to Verona and will like to visit the rest of Italy (i.e. Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan) by train but not sure whether I should buy the train pass beforehand and whether there's any saver pass? Also, where to get them?

As for buses my lovely mates made me catch them, but i really didnt like them, way too busy for me and i think a perfect chance to get robbed, if u mean coach i think that wud be ok, maybe as it would of course be less packed, i think train a good idea, A lot of italians have scooters, yet this is dangerous as well, im really not helping you am i! Budgets flights that my answer and loadsa walking, as u see locals and have a wkd capuncino
i hope i havet confused u2 much lots of luck, xxx

hi there,
i can highly reccommend seeing Italy by train. It's how I experienced it the first time and I persoanlly think the train is half the fun of getting around Italy. if you don't want to travel alone check out my friends website www.gsbigadventures.com as he runs probably the best method to see Italy out there at the moment.
ciao for now
Katy
