Japan by storm

By johnshedwick
Description: Whenever I've mentioned my obsession with going to Japan everyone says "Why not Newzeland, why not Thailand". Japan offers something more interesting for the international tramper- Unrecognisable signs and culture; the perfect place for those with a passive disposition.

First impressions
December 9th 2006, Tokyo, Japan

After priming myself for Japanese culture by watching the Fast and the Furious 3 on the plane I felt I was ready to fully intermingle with eastern society. Armed with my rough guide and the belief that before you do anything in this place, you take off your shoes (Note: Incorrect behaviour before boarding a train; long expensive trip back to get them), I graced the subway and it's custom with my naive western charm. How efficient the transport system is, perfect for when i'm rolling about sake'd up to my eyeballs. I approached my hostel on the premise that it still existed- it had been 6 months ago when I booked. It did, I paid and instantly searched for an English accent as one does when they are bred to believe their country is "special" (Note: On return, bring down British government.). At the hostelI I fed, distributed my belongings all over the floor and hit Rappongi armed with two Australians and a thirst of 1000 camels. If anyone visits Tokyo and likes dancing like a rabid gibbon, club Vanilla in Rappongi is the best. Three floors of music, Three hundred occupants ( probably more) and open till eight am. The first night was a definate taste explosion!
