I was born in Canberra and have lived here all the life. My familiarity with and appreciation for this beautiful little city can show you a part of Australia that is often overlooked by mainstream tourists. Want to know something about Canberra? Ask Dani a question

Q: In your opinion, what is Canberra’s number one attraction?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 16th May 2006
A: Lake Burley Griffin: It is a fairly central and picturesque part of town – on a walk around the lake you will encounter beautiful views as well as numerous cafes & restaurants, bbq/picnic areas and attractions such as the National Museum. You can also hire a paddleboat and venture out onto the water if you so desire.

Q: What else shouldn’t be missed?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 16th May 2006
A: The view from Mount Ainslie (better and less crowded than the also very pretty view from Black Mountain Tower), especially at night or sunrise/sunset.
The War Memorial is a beautiful and moving place, and a must for those interested in culture and history.
The National Botanic Gardens display an array of Australian flora.
If you’re after a kangaroo – the National Zoo and Aquarium (but check out the outer suburbs in the early morning first, where they can often be seen grazing – despite what you may have been told they aren’t likely to be hanging in the city center).

Q: Is it expensive to eat out in Canberra ?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 16th May 2006
A: No. We have our fair share of fine dining, but there are many cheap eateries. By far the most popular is Zeffirelli Pizza Restaurant (it also has pasta, meat and salads) – where you will get a large meal and drink for under AUD$20.
The Food Court Family Restaurant in Dickson is all you can eat (fairly unauthentic) Asian food.
The food courts in all the shopping centers generally have a wide variety of cuisine, generally at a fairly reasonable price.

Q: What is the best part of Canberra to eat out in?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 16th May 2006
A: Civic has heaps of cafes, and is very popular, while Manuka is known as a more sophisticated café spot (but its really not that much better – I think it offers more to middle aged briefcase-bearers). If you have money to burn, I recommend the Boathouse – voted Canberra’s best restaurant, it has a beautiful view of the lake and beautiful food. For a view of the entire city try the Tower Restaurant in Black Mountain Tower (here you can try kangaroo!). Both of these are beautiful places to eat, but they are in the higher price bracket. For the same view for a tenth of the price I recommend grabbing some take away (Chinese, or Subway, or even Zeffirellis who have a take-away option on all their meals) and heading up to Mount Ainslie. Take a seat at the lookout and look out on the city as you enjoy your dinner (take a blanket in winter).
Attractions such as the Botanic Gardens, National Museum and War Memorial all have little cafes that you can stop at between all your sight-seeing.

Q: What is your favourite bar/club in Canberra ?

A: Mooseheads is definitely the most popular, it has a bar downstairs and dance floor upstairs. Again, go on a Thursday.
