Q: Hi Karen, ich werde im August einige Tage in Wien verbringen und moechte wissen, wo man sich in der Nacht mit anderen Leuten ein bisschen unterhalten kann. Ich habe gelesen, du hast im Sommer die Donauinsel vorgeschlagen. Was ist es denn genau? Ist dort was los? Danke im Voraus fuer deine Antwort. Riccardo Submitted By: Ricky on the 6th June 2006 A: Hallo Riccardo! Die Donauinse ist eine 20km lange künstliche Insel, die in der Donau angelegt wurde, um Wien vor Hochwasser zu schützen. Der künstlich geschaffene Seitenarm der Donau ("Neue Donau" wird von Booten nicht befahren, daher haben sich dort viele schwimmende Lokale niedergelassen. Sie befinden sich auf beiden Ufern der Donau und sind über eine schwimmende Fußgängerbrücke miteinander verbunden. Die Hauptlokale sind mit der U-Bahn U1 erreichbar- einfach bei der Station "Donauinsel" ausssteigen- und schon bist mitten im Geschehen. Im Sommer ist dort bei schönen Wetter sehr viel los, insbesondere natürlich am Wochenende. Da fast nur junge Leute dort hin fortgehen, halten sich auch die Preise in Grenzen, wodurch das ganze erschwinglich wird ;) Falls du die letzte U-Bahn gegen viertel 2 versäumst, kannst du immer noch mit den Nachtbussen heimfahren, die gehen ca alle halbe Stunde von dort weg und bringen dich bis ins Stadtzentrum. Q: Hi Karen! I'm traveling to Vienna by myself for a few days in June and was wondering if you had any tips on places, besides my hostel of course, where it's easy to meet people? I speak only a little German (I'm interning in Graz for the summer at an English speaking company) so that tends to make things difficult. Please let me know if you have any suggestions!! If you go out at night it should be no problem to meet loads of new people if you go to the area around the tube station "Schwedenplatz". It´s know as the Bermuda Dreieck with loads of bars and clubs. It´s the most known place among tourists and, especially at the weekend, crowded with other foreigners and international guests. If you seek local contacts, don´t worry, young Austrians do speak English on a high level, the conversation should be no problem at all ;) A good way to meet other tourists are the guided tours in English trought the most popular museums and the inner city. There are usually more young people you might expect and they are quite open fpr new contacts. I hope, I could help you with this, if you have any other questions, please contact me. Q: What is your ‘insider tip’ for Vienna? Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 1st April 2006 A: If you go there in summer, leave the inner city behind you and spend a night out at the Donauinsel (taking tube nr. 1). There is a great atmosphere out there.

Q: Is it easy to get around Vienna? Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 1st April 2006 A: Vienna has one of the best public transport systems in the world with tubes, buses, trams and S-bahn (overground train)...you shouldn't be walking more than 5 minutes to the next stop, no matter where you are.
