Top Tip: Get Lonely Planet & bring it w/ you on all your trips. Trust me.

I've lived in Atlanta for 5 years now and in the state of Georgia for about 8 years. I think I have a broad range of interests and will try almost anything once. I go out on the town usually once a week but have been to all kinds of bars, clubs, and places to eat. I'm always up for helping out a fellow traveler!

Q: where's best place to meet women in ATL? is smoking allowed in bars?
Submitted By: j on the 15th March 2006
A: Well, I suppose it depends what kind of women you're trying to meet age-wise and ethnicity. I'm a 26 year old caucasian male, so this is where I like to go.

To meet chicks, I would suggest bars and clubs. Here are some places that there are usually a good ratio of guys to girls. But being realistic, there are almost always more guys then girls in bars and clubs. So, in Buckhead, I'd say East Andrews (bar) or maybe Peachtree Tavern (bar). PT usually has 80's music and girls love that for some reason. Midtown, I'd say Twisted Taco (bar). In the Virginia Highlands people always say that Dark Horse (bar) is a meat market. Clubs, I'd probably go w/ Compoud, which is in the industrial part of town just west of Atlantic Station.

Smoking. Tough one. Recently they've been changing the law here in Atlanta. Most bars that are 21 and up allow smoking. If it's a restaurant / bar, after X-time you can smoke. Most any club or bar will allow smoking. I'd say bring your cigs w/ you and see what everyone else is doing or just ask the bouncer.
Q: How many days would you recommend for visiting Atlanta to capture the real essence of the city?
Submitted By: carms1 on the 14th March 2006
A: I suppose, it really depends on the kind of traveler you are. If you like to go, go, go, then you can probably see everything you want to see in 2 days. However, if you like to take your time more so, then I would suggest you give yourself 3+ days. It's totally dependent upon what you want to see. Remember, ATL is a fairly spread out city, so going from Six Flags Over Georgia to say Stone Mountain is probably a 45 minute drive for example. If you have a more specific question, feel free to ask away. Thanks!
Q: What is your ‘insider tip’ for Atlanta?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 25th January 2006
A: If you're visiting stay in Midtown. Downtown's scary after dark, especially for a tourist.
Q: Is it easy to get around Atlanta?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 25th January 2006
A: Not really. We probably have the worst mass public transport system for a large city in the country (www.itsmarta.com). You can take MARTA (the rail) or a bus, or cab it or walk. The city's sprawling, so things can really be spread out.
Q: What is your favourite bar/club in Atlanta?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 25th January 2006
A: Favorite bar is 'Neighbor's' in the Virginia Highlands, especially on a Friday during the spring or summer after work. They've got a huge patio. I used to enjoy '1150', but just on occasion. 'Compound' is hot, along with 'Aiko'.
Q: Is it expensive to go out at night in Atlanta?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 25th January 2006
A: Again, it really depends on what you want to do. You'll pay a cover at most clubs and the price varies. An average admission price is around $10. Drinks are usually $4 for a beer and maybe $6 for a mixed drink.
