I have lived in Salt Lake City for the past twenty years. I know all the ins and outs of this beautiful city that is great for skiing, snowboarding, and of course, the Sundance Film Festival which takes place in Park City, just 15 minutes outside the city. I have frequented the club and music scenes, and as an enjoyer of independent film, there is no better place to live.

Q: Have you had any experiences in a hostel?
Submitted By: Darren Gilbert on the 8th September 2006
A: I have had many experiences in hostels outside of the United States, but seeing as I have lived in Salt Lake City my entire life, I have never had the opportunity of staying in a hostel here. As far as searching for a hostel in Salt Lake City, location will be everything. Keep in mind that the Salt Lake City street numbers are smaller the closer you get to downtown. Downtown, The Avenues, and Capitol Hill are probably the best areas to search for. Rose Park is close to downtown but it is a run-down area with high crime and very low property values, so any hostel you find in that area will probably not be great. Salt Lake City has notoriously cheap motel and hotel rates, so if you find a hotel that is close to the area you want to stay, check the price. It might be worth it.
Q: Do you know of any Bus routes that go to or near Saltair or Great Salt Lake? Are there any campsites there?
Submitted By: Darren Gilbert on the 8th September 2006
A: I don't know of any camp sites that are near Saltair. Saltair is in a relatively isolated area adjacent to the Great Salt Lake. The only thing close to it would be the Kennecot copper mine. As for bus routes, I have not been able to locate any that stop at Saltair, but the Utah Transit Authority's website is www.utabus.com. That includes all of the bus maps and schedules. Saltair is relatively abandoned nowadays and is really only used for concerts on the odd occasion. During the day, you will most likely find the doors locked and not a soul around. It is a historical building that is architecturally very interesting, though. If you want to visit Saltair, your best bet is probably to hire a cab or rent a car. I would check the bus schedules though. Any bus that is heading in that direction will be going to Tooele, a small town located about 45 minutes outside of Salt Lake City.
Q: What is your ‘insider tip’ for Salt Lake City?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 24th February 2006
A: Take your time to see the sights, and don't worry about money. The best things to do in the city are free. The best times can be had just hanging out and enjoying a cup of coffee while you people-watch. Sam Weller's bookstore on 250 South and Main has just about any book you could ever want, and delicious, cheap coffee.
Q: Is it easy to get around Salt Lake City?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 24th February 2006
A: Very easy. Walking is essential, but the city is relatively level and has short blocks. Trax, the city's Metro Station, is free in the downtown area and cheap everywhere else, but it only runs until 1:00 AM. Taxi rides in Salt Lake City are about half of what they cost in New York, and busses run around the clock in most areas.
Q: What is your favourite bar/club in Salt Lake City?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 24th February 2006
A: Panache on Main Street is great for wine, as is Bacchus in Park City. For cocktails, try Green Street. Gay bars and clubs are all around the city, but The Trapp, just a few minutes walk out of downtown, is the most popular. The Paper Moon and Mo Diggity's are great lesbian bars that are just outside of downtown.
Q: Is it expensive to go out at night in Salt Lake City?
Submitted By: Hostelworld Moderator on the 24th February 2006
A: It is hard to find a cocktail that will end up costing you more than 6.00 USD. In Salt Lake City, restrictive liquor laws require all visitors to bars to buy a year's membership, but this generally only costs around 10.00 - 20.00 USD depending on where you are visiting.
