A study trip in the Dominican Republic will introduce you to the profound differences between your host and home countries, both good and bad! Exposure to this unique culture will no doubt have a profound impact on your life. So it makes sense to delve beyond the realm of the short stay tourist, and discover the true depth of this remarkable country.
Beyond the phoney ‘cultural performances’ and the shark smiles of hustlers in the tourist centres, there lies a country famous for its genuine hospitality. But with so many people (understandably) looking to take your money, it can be hard to know where to find the more authentic Dominican Republic. Invariably, the best choice is to head inland, where you can find welcoming communities and breathtaking natural attractions scandalously overlooked by beach hungry visitors.
The Central Mountains around Bonao, only 90 minutes from Santo Domingo, is a perfect example of this. The sleepy villages of Los Quemados and Blanco, nestled in unspoiled, fertile valleys, appear like windows to another time. One could spend many fascinating days here merely enjoying the natural beauty of the location and the warm hospitality of the Dominican campesinos.
The adventurous will find endless diversion and pleasure from mountain activities such as horseback riding, trekking to waterfalls, and swimming in the countless babbling streams and waterholes. Anything is possible, from hiring a motorbike to explore the corkscrew roads, to setting up camp on a remote mountaintop. A few days spent in and around Bonao will open your eyes to an intriguing way of life usually hidden from the regular tourist. You’ll return with unforgettable memories and a real feel for the people and the country.
