About Dresden

Dresden, in eastern Germany, is a picturesque city on the River Elbe with lots of beautiful architecture. Its skyline is filled with the ornate spires and grand domes of Renaissance palaces and Baroque churches that have been expertly reconstructed. The city's collections of art, jewels and artefacts sit in its many museums and galleries. This historic place has a young vibe too, in neighbourhoods where streets are lined with artisan coffee shops, vegan eateries and offbeat pubs and bars.

At the hostels in Dresden, you can expect budget-friendly extras like free Wi-Fi and parking, with some places even offering free dinner, tours and bikes. Get to know other travellers on a rooftop terrace with views of Dresden's Altstadt at one city-centre hostel or around a campfire in the gardens of a 100-year-old house. You can also stay in a colourful Dresden hostel with a quirky Mexican spirit and an on-site bar serving tequila and caipirinhas.

Each of Dresden's neighbourhoods brings something different to the city. Wander around the 18th-century cobbled streets of Altstadt (the old town) to see grand architectural sights. Along the riverside promenade of the Striesen and Blasewitz quarters, find a laid-back beer garden to spend an afternoon in. Äußere Neustadt is one of the city's coolest districts, with a buzzing energy. Here, artists and students order from food trucks or shop in independent boutiques during the day and choose between over 100 bars and clubs on nights out.

For things to do, head to the old town to see the grand dome of the Baroque Frauenkirche church and the three museums, including the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) within the ornate Zwinger palace, inspired by Versailles. There's also the Grünes Gewölbe, or royal treasury, to visit at the Renaissance palace Residenzschloss, where grand chambers display collections of ancient coins, gold and diamonds. Unwind in the open parklands along the River Elbe for an al-fresco lunch or to catch a film at its pop-up outdoor cinema.

Dresden International Airport is less than 10km from the centre, which can be reached via the S2 train in about 20 minutes. The S2 will take you into Dresden Central Station along with fast trains from Berlin-Hauptbahnhof and Leipzig. With its many flat roads, bikes and scooters are popular choices for nipping around the city, or you can jump on the buses and trams.
