go sailing
the road works are a bit of a mess but the whitsundays boat trip was amazing, make sure you go sailing while in airlie beach
The main gateway to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach is one of the most popular stops on the east coast of Australia and attracts backpackers in their droves all year round.
Found directly across from Melbourne's best-known landmark Flinders Street Station, Federation Square (which is better known as 'Fed Square') is a melting pot of culture. Here you can visit attractions such as the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the National Gallery of Victocia (NGV). In this podcast Hostelworld.com's Colm Hanratty speaks to Kim Polkinghorne to find out about this great attraction.

the staff & people i met on my trip were very friendly - its a shame about the roadworks, but Im sure once they have finished the place would be even more beautiful.
Insider Tip:dont let the road works let the experience of the place get you down
Great place to hang out before heading to whitsunday tours. Not an awful lot to do but chilling by the lagoon in the sun is enough for me! Night life in peak season is awesome! A good choice of shops for a small town
When we went to Airlie Beach the road was being dug up and roadworks were in progress. In honesty it ruined it a little bit but you can see that the town is becoming more popular and there is development everywhere. A definite place for backpackers with lots of bars and restaurants with big nights out. during the day there is a man made lagoon which is good for sunbathing.
Insider Tip:Definitely book a boat trip around the Whitsunday Islands and make sure you get one that visits Whitehaven Beach. This is just breathtaking and there are plenty of places where you can book last minute boat trips along the main road.
A lively party town that is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. Not a great deal to see though unless you are heading out in to the Islands (which are amazing!)
Insider Tip:The meal and a beer for $13 at Beaches (next to Nomads)
Golden Beaches, dense rainforest and one of the wonders of the world - Queensland is one of Australia's most fascinating states. Beginning in Noosa in Southern Queensland running up to Cairns, this stretch of coastline in Oz is full of travellers.
