Enjoying a spectacular location between Waitemata and Manukau Harbours, and surrounded by and built on fifty extinct volcanoes, Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and the gateway to the country's North Island. It boasts a neat and compact city centre which doesn't require too much leg-stretching when checking out its sights, restaurants and bars. It is also home to some of the country's most cosmopolitan neighbourhoods.

I had one night in Auckland this trip and it has definitely changed since the last time I was there many years ago. The city is clean, vibrant and lively and the harbour areas with all the restaurants, bars etc is lovely to walk around at night. Its a safe city with a little bit of everything and I will definitely be back for a weekend again!
Insider Tip:Use the ferry system for some great day trips!
To get a bigger picture of the Auckland area, walk to the top of Mt Eden for panoramic views, great at sunrise or sunset, and take a ferry to Rangitoto or Waiheke islands.
Beautiful city lot of culture and a great night life. Hit the harbor for good food and whale watching in the day then party in the clubs at night.

The second last visit on my south pacific trip, I had 5 days here to explore. Auckland is just like any big city but was really nice, had no issues, good for shopping and a good starting point for any New Zealand trip. Visit Auckland Museum for sure!
Insider Tip:Get the ferry to Rangitoto Island in the morning, about $27 for a return, don't bother getting the pricier tour of $59. Explore the island on foot and walk to the top for very rewarding views of Auckland, bring your camera!
New Zealand is one of the most popular countries in the world among backpackers. It is famed for its awe inspiring scenery thanks to an array of mountains, glaciers and lakes. If you like adrenaline sports this is one of the best countries in the world to do them. And as it is divided between a north and south island, not many countries in the world are as diverse as this one.
