City Guide Auckland, New Zealand

Visiting Auckland

Enjoying a spectacular location between Waitemata and Manukau Harbours, and surrounded by and built on fifty extinct volcanoes, Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and the gateway to the country's North Island. It boasts a neat and compact city centre which doesn't require too much leg-stretching when checking out its sights, restaurants and bars. It is also home to some of the country's most cosmopolitan neighbourhoods.

Auckland is an excellent city that offers great views and culture, and i would recommend that everbody who visits new zealand for any time more than a fortnight at least spend a few nights there; however it is very expensive and many of the activities available are very pricey

Auckland - take a ferry trip and have a meal down by the water front

Auckland can get a bit boring being in the city so make sure you take a ferry trip to one of the islands, get some good views of the city too!

Insider Tip:The restaurant down by the water front that begins with a P and is all white seating and tables does an amazing steak, and not a bad house red ;)

Not the best part of NZ

A nice enough city and it is good to be back in a busy city before heading home etc or perhaps after a long time spent on the South Island to refresh you but it is not a place I would spend much time in. The rest of NZ is far far better.

Insider Tip:Queen Street hostels (although slightly more costly) are a much better option

A city with alot to offer!

I had one night in Auckland this trip and it has definitely changed since the last time I was there many years ago. The city is clean, vibrant and lively and the harbour areas with all the restaurants, bars etc is lovely to walk around at night. Its a safe city with a little bit of everything and I will definitely be back for a weekend again!

Insider Tip:Use the ferry system for some great day trips!

    Around Auckland in 1 day

To get a bigger picture of the Auckland area, walk to the top of Mt Eden for panoramic views, great at sunrise or sunset, and take a ferry to Rangitoto or Waiheke islands.
