A Berlin Institution

Scattered all over the German capital are Imbiss stands - stands that sell currywurst, a chopped up sausage, doused in ketchup and sprinkled with a touch of curry powder. The most famous one is under Eberswalder Str. U-Bahn station.

• Oranium

  Oranienburger Str. 33/34, Mitte, Berlin, Germany

  Of all the restaurants that line this busy street, Oranium is the most vibrant. Popular with young people, you can get everything from a grilled sandwich from €4 to a main course for no more than €10. For the best value get one of the tapas deals where €12 will get you (and somebody else) four portions.

• El Malécon de Havana

  Monbijouplatz 11-12, Berlin-Mitte, Berlin, Germany

  This is an Italian restaurant that also serves Cuban cuisine. If you are looking for a more lively restaurant this might be what you are looking for as there is a bar here and sometimes live music.

• Hackescher Hof

  Rosenthalerstrasse 40-41, Hackescher Markt., Berlin, Germany

  This is a huge restaurant that can get a bit loud sometimes with a resonably priced menu. Late opening hours mean it is a good place to eat if you don't want to move anywhere after eating.

• Mao Thai

  Wörtherstrasse 30, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany

  One of Berlin's best Thai restaurants with a menu serving all types of nice and spicy food. If Thai food isn't your thing, Chinese dishes are also served. It's very popular so making reservations is advised.

• Alexanderkeller

  Köpenickerstrasse 92, Berlin-Mitte, Berlin, Germany

  For good local cuisine take time out to visit this eaterie which is particularly good for lunches. Meat is very prominent on the menu so vegetarians keep your distance!

• Hard Rock Café

  Meinekestrasse 21, Near the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin, Germany

  If you are in no mood to try something new or too exotic, the Hard Rock Café is always a safe bet serving burgers and french fries. The memoribilia on the walls is always interesting too.

• Taba

  Chausseestrasse 106, Berlin, Germany

  Beautiful Mexican and Brazilian food served in very large portions. Occasional live salsa music also.
  Open Mon-Thurs 6pm-midnight, Fri-Sun 6pm-1am.

• Mensa der Freie Universitat

  Habelschwerdter Allee 45, Berlin, Germany

  Large menu serving good food at student prices. The cafeteria on the first floor is more expensive. Student ID necessary.
  
  Open Mon-Fri 11:15am-2:30pm.

• Restaurant Marche

  Kurfurstendamm 15, Near Bahnhof Zoo, Berlin, Germany

  This bright, attractive cafeteria has very affordable lunches. Hot pastries €8-€13.

• Rogacki

  Wilmersdorferstrasse 145, Berlin, Germany

  A huge delicatessen with a lovely selection of meats and cheeses for sandwiches. Soups from €3.

• Zur Letzten Instanz

  Waisenstrasse 14, Berlin, Germany

  A traditional Berlin restaurant, established in 1621. Many entrees available for under €20.
  Open Mon 4pm-midnight, Tues-Sat 11am-midnight.

• Schlotzsky's Deli

  Friedrich Str. 200, Mitte, Berlin, Germany

  Blatantly cashing in on its proximity to Checkpoint Charlie, Schlotzsky's Deli deals in hunger-busting sandwiches rammed with ingredients you'd expect to find in any American deli. Choose from a wide range of sandwiches or save a few euros by getting one of the combo-meals.
