Scattered all over the German capital are Imbiss stands - stands that sell currywurst, a chopped up sausage, doused in ketchup and sprinkled with a touch of curry powder. The most famous one is under Eberswalder Str. U-Bahn station.
Due to such a multi-national population, Berlin has restaurants to suit almost any taste and budget. Each of the numerous nationalities living here have brought a taste of their own country with them in restaurants that are scattered throughout the city.
Open-air markets are another source of good quality, affordable food. Winterfeldpl opens every Saturday morning and has a lot to offer. For a more Turkish flavour, try the market in Kreuzberg on the banks of the Landwehrkanal. This opens every Friday.
But if during your visit you say to yourself “when in Rome …” and you want to sample some of Berlin’s local dishes, the selection is pretty healthy. Try Eisbein mit Sauerkraut und Erbsenpüree (pork knuckle with sauerkraut and mushy peas), bouletten (meatballs) or, for a special treat, currywurst (curried sausage) from one of the city’s omnipresent Imbiss stands.
