Entertainment in Canberra, Australia

As is the case in any university town or city, and Canberra has two, the student population adds a unique vibrancy to the nightlife in the capital. Add to this the host of twenty-four hour bars found in the city centre and suburbs and the fact that all Canberra’s hotels have unlimited opening hours and you can see that there’s certainly nothing to worry about when it comes to the social scene in the city.

Hundreds of bars, pubs and clubs scattered throughout the city attract people in their droves, particularly on a Friday night when they end their week in style. If you’re not partial to queuing or ‘standing room only’ establishments, however, try partying on an alternate night or getting out a little earlier to beat the crowds – we can strongly recommend either.

Finally, for a slightly more relaxing evening check out the Canberra Theatre Centre on Civic Square. As well as featuring an excellent range of plays, it also hosts concerts, dance performances, stand-up and the like providing a pleasant alternative for those of you who are tiring slightly of the pub and club scene – shame on you!

For up to date information on exactly what’s going on about the city try to get your hands on a copy of Good Times, the entertainment supplement which you will find in the Thursday edition of the Canberra Times. Other alternatives are BMA, the free monthly magazine with the low down on bands and clubs in the city and the quarterly Canberra What’s On which you will find in the visitor information centre and in most hotels.
