A number of annual festivals also liven up the streets of Melbourne. This is particularly true in the month of October, when the Melbourne International Festival which concentrates on visual and performing arts, the more experimental Fringe Festival and the Melbourne Writers Festival all take place more-or-less simultaneously. In early March the city hosts the Moomba Festival which includes firework displays and dragon boat races on the banks of the Yarra River in Alexandra Gardens. Between January and March three music festivals take place in the city. The Montsalvat Melbourne Jazz Festival takes place in the last week in January and the Melbourne Music Festival in February. This is one of the largest Australian festivals of popular music. In the third week of March it is the turn of the Brunswick Music Festival which concentrates on folk and world music. In addition to these specialist festivals Melbourne boasts a lively and diverse pub and club scene throughout the year with its thriving band scene providing some excellent live music.
