Pisa is home to an array of night time distractions, from cool cocktail dens to lively local bars. Drinks are pretty good value, and you’ll find some places also offer free finger food you can nibble on while you drink.
Around the University of Pisa, you’ll come across a number of funky little bars. These are, of course, pretty popular with the city’s large student population who you’ll often find talking up a storm inside or holding court at the tables often found outside.
Along the banks of the River Arno, you’ll find a number of nightspots including Bazeel on Lungarno Antonio Pacinotti and Amaltea on Lungarno Mediceo. Both bars have outdoor seating areas which are very popular and on fine nights you’ll hear the chattering patrons enjoying a drink there before you see them.
Keep in mind that things don’t really get going in the bars here until after 8pm.
Lungarno Antonio Pacinotti 1, Santa Maria, Pisa, Italy
With tables available on two levels inside, Bazeel has plenty of space where you can sit under the exposed stone ceilings and enjoy the loud music and lively conversation. One of the best things about this popular spot is the outdoor seating area. From here you can watch the sun set over the Arno while you enjoy a beer or sip on a cocktail.
Open daily, 7am-1am.
Lungarno Mediceo 49, San Francesco, Pisa, Italy
A hip bar hopping with punters, Amaltea is a favourite with locals who can be seen and heard, seated at the tables spilling from the bar across Piazza Cairoli. There are plenty of places to perch in the chic interior too, with platters of food laid out along the bar each evening. Beers, wines, spirits and cocktails are all available and won’t break the bank.
Open Mon-Tues 5pm-1am, Wed-Sun 5pm-2am.
Via della Sapienza 7, Santa Maria, Pisa, Italy
Spread over two floors, this lively bar also has a selection of tables outside. These are a favourite with students from the nearby University of Pisa, who you’ll hear before you see as you walk towards this bar on a busy night. Friendly staff serve up beer, wine and much more.
Open Mon-Fri 8am-1am, Sat-Sun 6pm-1am.
Viale A. Gramsci 2, Sant'Antonio, Pisa, Italy
Busy but with a laid-back atmosphere typical of the city, this wine bar is well-worth a look. Not only does it offer a wide variety of red and white wines, you’ll also find spirits and beers on the drinks menu. While you drink, you can snack on peanuts, chips and more, and the tables outside are the perfect spot to people-watch on a warm Pisa night.
Open daily, 24 hours.
Vicolo della Croce Rossa 5, Santa Maria, Pisa, Italy
Tucked in off the beaten path on a little side street, Ambaraba is first and foremost a cocktail bar. It offers a huge choice of brightly coloured tipples, to be enjoyed in the comfortable interior. The friendly atmosphere and the affordable prices make this a popular spot, and it's the place to go if you're looking for a great value cocktail.
Open Sun-Thurs 8pm-1am, Fri-Sat 8pm-2am, closed Tues.
