Transport in Queenstown, New Zealand

Getting There
The airport in Queenstown is located at Frankton which lies about ten kilometres outside the city centre. This is served by a number of shuttle buses leaving regularly, however, and which will take you into town in a matter of minutes for about $6. Taxis are also readily available outside the terminal and this will cost about $15.

The city is served by Air New Zealand with regular direct and connecting flights from all the major centres in the country including Auckland, Christchurch, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Wanaka and Mount Cook as well as Sydney and Brisbane in Australia. Ansett New Zealand also operates daily flights to Christchurch, Rotorua, Auckland, Te Anau and Milford.

The other alternative is to travel to Queensland by bus from elsewhere in the country. InterCity buses operate daily routes between the city and Christchurch, Mount Cook, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Invercargill, Dunedin, Wanaka and Haast Pass. There are also a number of private owned tours that operate services to and from Queensland.

Getting Around
Once you arrive in the city making your way around is extremely straightforward. The Shopper bus operates between 6.30am and 11.00pm daily serving all the major hotels as well as the airport, Sunshine Fernhill, Frankton, Remarkables Park Shopping Centre and downtown Queenstown. A day pass for this service costs $6.50.

For sightseeing tours take the British style double decker bus which travels between Queenstown and Arrowtown taking in Hayes, Bungy Bridge and Cavell Bridge on the way. This journey lasts about three hours and costs $27. It departs at the top of the Mall daily at 10.00am and 2.00pm.

During the ski season Kiwi Discovery operates a service to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona and return tickets cost $23 to the first two destinations and $30 to the latter.

Bike and moped hire is also quite popular and can cost anything from $14 upwards for regular bikes to $35 or more for scooters. If you are going to avail of this service, it is well worth shopping around for the best value as there can be a significant difference in price from company to company.
