Eating Out in Riga, Latvia

When it comes to eating out, Riga offers an array of tasty options. Prices are pretty reasonable too. So no matter what your budget or dietary preferences, you’ll be able to find something that suits.

Many of Riga’s restaurants are located in and around the Old Town area. International dishes are well-represented, from Italian pizzas to American burgers to Japanese sushi.

Traditional Latvian food can also be sampled throughout Riga. One of the best places to try some Latvian cuisine is the LIDO Recreation Centre out on Krasta. Here you can choose from a buffet of over 500 different low-priced and tasty dishes.

For something a little different, check out the Centraltirgus or Central Market. Between the five zeppelin hangar buildings and the outdoor stalls, many different vendors offer the best in local fresh foods, from fruit and vegetables to fish and meat to delicious pastries.

    A pretty extensive affair, Riga’s central market was opened in 1930 and is located inside old-school zeppelin hangars that were moved to their current location. Vendors are friendly and offer a huge selection of foods from fresh fish to dried fruits. Make sure to check out the stalls offering delicious pastries, biscuits and cakes. Follow your nose and you’re bound to find these tempting treats.

    From its funky interior, which features an open kitchen with a well-stocked salad bar, to its friendly staff, this spot is definitely worth a visit. Eat in comfort and choose from a large selection of meals including pastas, salads, meat and fish dishes and much more. A nice touch is the basket of rye bread and delicious herb butter brought to the table just after your order. Reasonable prices too.

  • LIDO Recreation Centre

    Spread over three floors, this is a great place to check out for a real taste of Latvian cuisine. And the best part? You can fit your meal exactly to your tastes, by choosing from over 500 different dishes that make up the bountiful buffet. Traditional dishes such as grey peas, along with many other Latvian offerings, can all be sampled here. Portions are large and prices are low.

  • Charlestons (Čarlstons)

    Blaumaņa 38-40, Riga, Latvia

    If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful lunch, this is a great choice. Along with some great values soups and a well-stocked salad bar, you’ll also find cheap, large and delicious pizzas. Not that you’ll be waiting long, but if you have short attention span and you’re sitting in the front part of the restaurant, you can keep yourself amused by creating your own works of art on the brown paper table clothes with the materials provided on each table.

  • Del Popolo Restorāns

    Jāņa iela 8, Old Town, Riga, Latvia

    Really attentive staff bring out the free bread and water as soon as you’ve chosen from the top-notch selection of Italian dishes on offer here. While it’s not a huge restaurant, it does offer a lot of tables and these are pretty well spaced out. There are some really nice touches from the cloth napkins to the cute curios on the whitewashed walls, and best of all, the price is right too with everything from risotto to pasta to meat and seafood dishes at reasonable prices.

  • Double Coffee

    Grēcinieku 11, Old Town, Riga, Latvia

    Part of a local chain, this restaurant is a good spot to start the day. Breakfasts here range from pancakes to porridge, along with scrambled eggs, croissants and much more. It serves a huge selection of lunch and dinner dishes, all listed in the Double Coffee Times, their menu which comes in the shape of a glossy newspaper. Staff are prompt, and prices are wallet-friendly.

  • V. Ķuze

    For a bit of treat and a trip back in time, check out this quaint cafés. Here you’ll be able to taste an array of milk and dark chocolates, while sipping on a thick and decadent hot chocolate. Relax in the 1930s style interior and make sure to have a feel of the fabric-covered walls.
