Transport in Surfers Paradise, Australia

Getting There
Coachtrans operate about forty daily connections between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Buses leave from the Transit Centre and take about ninety minutes to reach Surfers Paradise. A one-way ticket will cost you about AU$12. If you are travelling directly from the airport in Brisbane to the Gold Coast, take the Airporter which meets all domestic and international flights and will take you straight to your accommodation. This is slightly more expensive at $28 but can save a lot of hassle if you have pre-booked your accommodation in Surfers.

It is helpful to know that there is also a domestic terminal at Coolangatta which is about thirty minutes south of Surfers Paradise. A shuttle service connects the two as well as running to all points between the Gold Coast Airport and Surfers. This costs $9 for a one-way ticket and $14 for a return service.

Finally, if you’re taking the Sydney train to the Gold Coast, you will have to transfer to the coaches provided when you reach Murwillumbah. From here there are direct connections to Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise.

Getting Around
The entire Gold Coast Highway has its own twenty-four hour bus service operated by Surfside Buses and running between Coolangatta, Surfers Paradise and Southport. Tickets for the full journey costs around $8 ($10 to Dreamworld or Currumbin) but it is recommended that you avail of the ‘Day Rover’ pass if intend to make more than one or two journeys.

Coachtrans also operate a local bus service and for this the ‘Get Around Holiday Pass’ which will cost you about $45 for three days but offers door to door pick ups as well as transport to all the theme parks, shopping centres and transfers to restaurants and clubs in the evening.

Your final option is the country’s very first Aquabus. Travelling by road from the town centre, up the Esplanade to the Spit, it then drives into Broadwater providing a really fun boat cruise where you will get to see Mariners Cove, the Australia Fair as well as the many mansions of the resident tycoons. This leaves from opposite The Mark on Orchid Avenue and costs AU$22.

You will find the Surfers Paradise bus station on Beach Road which lies one street down from Cavill Avenue on the corner of the highway but most services do provide free pick ups at the majority of hostels in town.
