Akin to all the other major tourist destinations in New Zealand, Taupo can offer cuisine from all over the world as well as its much loved local Kiwi specialties. With over thirty restaurants, and this number is increasing all the time, serving dishes from as far afield as India, China, Italy, even the deep south in US makes an appearance, the choice on offer is excellent.
And as well as the variety when it comes to choosing your foods, the various types of eateries on offer are also extensive. Brasseries, cafes, delis, sandwich bars, restaurants and takeaways can be found throughout the town and the surrounding area meaning that all budgets and tastes are adequately catered for.
For fish lovers among you there are two particular favourites among locals and tourists alike. Firstly, since you are in the biggest trout fishing town in the world, it would be a terrible pity not to sample it at least once while you are there. And, what makes it slightly more interesting is that many restaurants don’t actually have trout on the menu. Instead you have to catch your own and it will be cooked exactly the way you like it. The other seafood specialty in Taupo are the fresh water prawns which are grown locally. The numerous hot springs in the region provide the perfect breeding ground and they really are delicious.
If you’re not a fish fan, however, don’t despair. There are more meat and vegetarian options than you could ever hope for. Fresh local produce of both varieties is delivered daily and served up for your gastronomic pleasure. All you have to do is decide what you fancy and enjoy.
