While Taupo and the surrounding area are primarily renowned for the activities which go on during the day, there is more than enough to occupy those of you who have energy left in the evening. So you might want to remember this while you’re jumping out of planes, tackling the rapids or tramping through the bush.
Many of the hostels have bars where everyone is welcome. These are usually an excellent choice as you get to meet up with hordes of fellow travellers who can tell you what they’ve been up to and where they’ve been. They might even be able to give you a few pointers. As well as this you also get to shares to tales of your daytime activities to people who might actually care – well the folks back home might just get a little tired of your bungy jumping story after the twentieth time. A final advantage with drinking in hostel bars is that they are usually cheaper than regular bars and provide excellent food too at reasonable prices.
Despite this fact, however, you don’t want to spend all your time hostels so you should get out and about to see the pubs and clubs in the town. And we’re sure you don’t need much encouragement. Taupo is not a big town so you should be able to find the hot spots quite easily. They are mainly located in the town centre and, like the hostels, most establishments serve really good food too.

Typical British pub located right in the heart of Taupo serving a host of local brews as well as a number of British and Irish beers. Also has an excellent ‘pub grub’ menu which serves as an excellent accompaniment for the selection of beers, wines and spirits on offer.

Part of the Go Global hostel, this traditional Irish pub has live entertainment most weekends and is an excellent place to meet up with fellow backpackers. Establishment also has a reasonably priced nightclub, restaurant and casino and is the number one party centre in Taupo.
11 Tongariro Street, Taupo, New Zealand
Another renowned backpacker haunt this pub is another one with something happening almost every night with special promotions too so ask around. Also has a really good food menu for those of you with the foresight to line your stomach before availing of the cheap booze.
34 Tuwharetoa Street, Taupo, New Zealand
Slightly classier than the aforementioned, but only slightly and just as much fun, the cocktails are certainly worth sampling. Also has an excellent selection of national and international beers and wines for those of you who prefer to stick with what you know.
Tongariro Street, Taupo, New Zealand
One of the few nightclubs in Taupo, this place can cater for up to two thousand revellers offering some indication as to just how mad it is. Be prepared to party because you certainly won’t get a chance to relax once you’re inside the doors.

Quirky bar featuring ‘Turkish Tent of the Long Nights’ – a tent style area with floor cushions around a long low table - as well as live entertainment most nights, an outdoor garden bar, street seating and an excellent menu featuring dishes from the deep south.
17 Tongariro Street, Taupo, New Zealand
As the name suggests this is a great place to check out for a rather tasty meal washed down by a beer or two. Reasonable prices and a friendly, fun atmosphere ensure that this is one bar well worth checking out.
4 Roberts Street, Taupo, New Zealand
Popular establishment on the lakefront, has outside seating for those balmy summer nights. Also has live music at the weekends with ample dance space for those of you who feel up to it.
