Eating Out in Washington DC, USA

Washington is only 65 square miles in size. To put that in perspective, just think that New York covers over 300 square miles! But this doesn’t mean any less quality or quantity in eateries. If anything, the turnover of restaurants in Washington is higher than in many other American cities.

There are various neighbourhoods around the city which are recognised more for there eateries than others. Dupont Circle, just north of downtown, is the best place in the city to go for international restaurants. Nearly every international cuisine is represented here. Further north is Adams Morgan, one of Washington’s trendier suburbs known for its fashionable restaurants.

You may initially find that eating out in the American capital can be somewhat expensive. If you are on a tight budget make your way to the ethnic restaurants rather than American ones. And, of course, if you wish to cook for yourself you won’t be long looking for a grocery store.

Something of an institution in DC, this fast food restaurant specialises in all types of hot dog. Their smoked dog is their specialty though. Try one of those along with some fries and a drink and you'll leave not only full, but also feeling like you've just eaten a piece of the city's history. Open Mon-Thurs 6am-2am, Fri 6am-4am, Sat 7am-4am, Sun 11am-11pm.

    Due to its large student population, Georgetown is a great place to eat out as most eateries suit those on a tight budget. This restaurant specialising in Ethiopian cuisine is one of the best in the area. If you haven’t tried Ethiopian food before you will be nicely surprised.
