Bordered by the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria, among other countries, Slovakia is quickly becoming more and more popular with backpackers travelling through Eastern Europe.
It became an independent state on January 1st, 2003 after the former state of Czechoslovakia was dissolved. Since then farming has been a vital part of the country’s economy, particularly in the south. Other industries which play in important role include the produce of metal products.
Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava, has a beautiful old town which has been rebuilding itself of late, whereas other parts of the country worth putting on your itinerary include the Low and High Tatras and Kezmarok, beside Pieniny National Park.
