My wife and I had the best time here! The hostel is in a quiet neighborhood. The rooms are beautiful with tatami mat floors and big, comfortable beds. The house has a very homely feel to it, and it makes you immediately feel comfortable. However, the highlight of our trip had to be the owner, Orie. She was so welcoming and friendly, and when my wife mentioned that we were on our honeymoon, Orie went out of her way to celebrate by opening a bottle of wine and giving us a lovely little gift!

More home than hostel -- the quarters are cramped and there are a good number of house rules concerning showering and lights out. That being said, the staff is extremely friendly and works hard to foster a sense of community.

I dont know if there is a lot of choice around Nagono hostelwise. But this should be your hostel of choice! Great relaxed place with a nice old skool Japanese feel to it. The common room or living room is a nice place for some socialzing and looks great. The staff was really helpfull with my daytrip planning. The location is good as well but Nagano is a small city for Japanese standards so its no wonder almost everything is walking distance. This hostel might just be your reason to visit Nagano!

Possibly my favorite hostel in all of Japan! 1166 is clean and comfy, like staying at someone's house. The staff is beyond helpful, and they take exceptional care in all they do.

This hostel was perfect for me! Key-san was super helpful and very nice! The facilities were cozy, but I like that. I would not recommend for "large" people or people who have issues climbing stairs. Everything was really clean; there were both western style and japanese style bathrooms; there was free coffee and tea and kitchen for preparing your own food. Their location is centrally located between Nagano Station and Zenko-ji Temple. I would go back!

Nice little hostel. Short walk to Zenko-ji and surrounding area, 20 min walk or 5-10 min bus from the main station.

Excellent location, really helpful and friendly staff and the atmosphere was fantastic with the large table being central. The mixed dorm room was excellent, very comfortable and clean. The decor was a little 1970s in parts and some of the facilities were dated but I'm sure some people would love that and say it had character... It was close to the temple complex and also a great base for a day trip to see the snow monkeys! I enjoyed my stay here and would stay again.

Super friendly owner and staff. The owner is extremely knowledgeable to many locations, how to get there, and has maps/directions/prices to help your journey. Met a lot of interesting people. Hope to stay there again one day.

Pros: good location close to Zenko Ji temple and the main street. The girl at the reception was nice and helpful. Cons: toilet and bedroom are at different floors, the layout of beds is inconvenient, there was cold at night.
