This hostel is a great option for people who intend to stay in Boston for a couple of days, who are not looking for spending all their free time hanging out at the hostel (there are two pool tables, some computers and a movie room though), who are traveling by themselves or with some friends. The area is great, the T is very close and what everyone says, the breakfast is massive. One bad point tho : if you're noise sensitive, you might wanna bring earplugs, just in case.

Aside from the shared bathroom, we felt like we were in a hotel! Soft sheets, very clean, quiet and friendly. They even gave us cookies. I would definitely come back here.

Hi Geordie, Thanks for taking the time to post your comments about your stay at 40 Berkeley. I'm sorry to hear that your experience was not consistent with your expectations. While we are not a shelter, we do have a small residents program for women that are seeking a warm, welcoming, safe place to live. We take pride in being able to offer that sort of environment to everyone - whether for one night or several years. To give you a bit of background about 40 Berkeley: The building that we now call home is the former YWCA Residence for Women. It was purchased in 2010 by a South End couple with years of real estate experience who transformed the building into the hip place it is today. By partnering with the non-profit organization, For Our Communities (FOCUS) we've ensured that the remaining long term residents of the YWCA would be able to stay in the home they had come to love. I hope this provides you with some clarification about who 40 Berkeley is and what we do. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

The staff was very friendly, attentive, and considerate of us during our stay. The only thing I disliked about the facility is that sound carries in the halls, and even light conversation just outside the rooms can be a nuisance. Otherwise a great deal and awesome location.

Not much happening at this hostel unlike others. No social activities, however, good walking distance to boston and easy to get around via subway. Rooms very clean, bathroom facilities excellent and daily buffet breakfast fantastic.

I'm sorry to hear that you did not feel like there were enough activities offered. We have a very extensive events program that provides guests with activities both in the hostel and around the city. For example, tonight we are hosting a free magic show complete with complimentary food and beverage! Upon checking in, each guest receives a welcome packet that includes a calendar of activities and events that are taking place that week. Did you find this helpful when searching for things to do? Great hostel! Super friendly staff, relatively clean rooms, amazing breakfast...I still can\'t figure how on earth it is possible to pay so few for a room and get something so good. Things to know: 1- The building is quite noisy at night, take earplugs or mp3 player with you! 2- The quality of the room and of the overall stay seems to highly depend on the floor where your room is, and on the room you\'re in. I\'ve been in two different rooms during my stay, one was perfectly clean, the other not.

Lately, I had travelled 18 cities in the United states. I normally had stayed in hostel, so I can compared this hostel with others. This hostel gives the best breakfast that I had experience. and the room was clean. The weakness was that it doesn't have kitchen that traveler can use and the bathroom was a little not clean and too old. Other things were great! Breakfast, resting facilites, free popcorn, quiet mood!

A very good place to stay in Boston. Very well located, cheap single rooms, impressive breakfast, nice staff... The (free) wifi is however a little undersized: I had no problem at all in the morning, but in the evenings, probably because of too many people connected, it was not very good. But overall I recommend this hostel.
