Stains on the sheets, lock on the door didn't work, the facilities it lists were a bit run down (pool table etc) and the wifi although free wasn't very useful the lights in the lodge were all switched off at night and couldn't be used at all. Staff were very friendly and knowledgable however the facilities were disappointing

Really nice and knowledgeable owner. Really nice aesthetic to the hostel. Most fun looking place I stayed in in new Zealand. You can earn your keep by doing a couple hours work a day

Staying at this hostel is great for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The staff advised us not to take the shuttle back to the car-park, but just to hitch-hike, at is saved us 30 dollars per person. The hostel itself has an interesting atmosphere, everyone is allowed to write, paint and stick things on the walls, so it is a colourful scenery. It did not bother us at all! If you are staying in a room next to the showers, you might have some sound from that, but it is not too troubling.

Ian was an amazing owner who looked out after us after an incident with our car. He is a genuinely good person and his hostel is kept in exceptional shape. It felt like home and it was very easy to meet new people here.
