I booked this hostel for my son and ended up paying £50 fine for smoking in the room.I think this is unfair and should have been charged to the guests.I did not have any control over the charge as it was taken off my card. Will never book on someone elses behalf again

Well England is expensive PERIOD. But the quality is low. I'm not going to leave a lot of comments but what really needs attention at this place is how EXTREMELY COLD IT IS!!! It's almost the same as to sleep outside. England is NOT Maldives and not Spain!!! It is VERY COLD! SO please get some heaters. They do exist in the 21st century.

Really great hostel. My only complaint would be that it's a little cool.

I stay there in the end of January; it was very cold and snowing, however only was heating in the common area. The kitchen was kind of freezer and the breakfast- dining room was chilled!!!

Neat building and little info plaques in the house.. The room was really cold overnight (no heater in the room), and the shower wasn't that warm so took a long time to warm up at the end of the day, luckily had lots of bed clothes. Nice kitchen and breakfast, although it's just a continental breakfast and not sure why it wouldn't go a little longer as it ends at 9am. Staff was helpful. Was fairly quiet the day we went. Nice kitchen.

The Building is really nice, obviously a bit of history behind it. Location was good, nice walk into the town and super close to the train station. The bunk beds were extremely unstable, wobbly and made a lot of noise. In terms of Cleanliness the En-suite in the room did not look like it had been cleaned daily and there was (what looked like) a blood stain on the duvet. Quite highly priced for what it is, would look to stay somewhere else if I did come back to York.

the communal room was fixing when I came and there was no place to relax except the bar. Kitchen is so small and not quite clean!

Ace is a lovely old building within easy walking distance of York's attractions - no need for public transport unless you are headed further afield. The staff were helpful and breakfast was good (if a bit early - it finished at 9am!). The bathrooms are a bit small, but as they were obviously added when the building was turned into a hostel, that's only to be expected and wasn't a major problem. Nice and clean - I would be happy to come back. Bring a jumper as the rooms can get chilly at night!

All in all it was ok. Nice building, good location. Outdoor parking spot next to it (5 minutes walk), 24 h for 11 pound. Two lockers should've been under the bunk bed - each per person - but without device to hang a lock: useless. The staff seemed a bit stressed, but ok.

When I arrived at the hostel the reception had 2 other guests waiting to be checked in. They were served then another group came in that we're also checked in before me. Total wait 50 mins. Room was fine. Very disrupted sleep which I expected because I was in a 10 bed dorm all other guests returned by 5:30 then, at 6am a very loud fan came on I left at 9am as there was no chance of getting any sleep. Check out was fine probably because we were the first to leave.

Most of the things were very good. The hostel looks beautiful, the beds are ok, the location is very good and they serve breakfast. There are two points we didn't like: -the shower was very very small, not that clean and it flooded just after a few minutes -we found it a bit strange that they put a homeless man in a room with other guests

We stayed in a double room on the top floor on a Saturday night. The room was amazing value and had lovely historical features and a nice view. However, it felt like there was a nightclub under my bed until about 3 in the morning, I could actually feel the bass in the music from a club below making my bed shake. Also in the early hours of the morning a few fellow guests decided to stand right outside our door making lots and lots of noise until about 4-5am. Apart from all that....it was lovely.

Staff were lovely and the location is great both for getting to the train station and for getting to and from the centre of York. Would definitely stay again, great!
