The night we got there the owner made us a traditional South African braai free of charge, all we had to do was buy the food. The atmosphere was amazing and I felt at home and safe during the entire stay. All of the staff was incredibly friendly and they are willing to book tours for clients and they made my stay very enjoyable. Amakaya also had great cooking facilities which was important because I went in a group of 10.

Thisis just what a hostel should be, basic. but it had what we needed and the staff where amazingly helpful. Dan is a cheeky devil so watch out for him, thanks for having us

The gentleman at reception was enough to put me off recommending what could be a great hostel. Our room was given away and then the receptionist made the most ludicrous amount of fuss in getting us a bed for the night. Terrible first impression. Having said that the hostel is well presented and the 1st floor decked bar is really nice.

Hello Daniel The gentleman that was at reception when you arrived was Dan. You only arrived at 11pm and did not even advise us you would be late. There was no phone number given with your booking that we could contact you on to find out if you were still going to arrive. Too many time has it happened that a Hostelworld booking has not arrived and we lose the income. When you had not arrived by 9.30pm Dan phoned me and told me that he had people wanting a room and that you had not yet arrived. I said he could let the room go by 10pm if you had not arrived by then. When you did arrive he arranged alternate accommodation for the other people that he gave the room to and put in the room. Perhaps in future if you are going to arrive late you should have the courtesy to call the accommodation to let them know that you are still on your way. That being said, if he was so bad to you why did you offer to buy him a beer for all his trouble. This is not how a person would react if they have had a bad experience with someone. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to do a review, although i feel that you are being unfair in your criticism as the staff here have always been courtous towards as can be seen from comments in our guest register and reviews done on Hostelworld. Hello Pawel Thank you for your review of your visit. Your ratings given for security, and location show an element of dissatisfaction. In order to improve on these I will appreciate some input as to what the problems were with these two items. Most guests that have stayed with us have found the location of 300m from Main street to be ideal. Similarly with the coded gate access control, the house that is locked at night and a staff member on the premises 24 hours a day security has never been an issue previously. I would like to know what the security concerns you had while staying with us so that I can address them. Regards Dave Swart

My family loved this Hostel. The location was great - very close to downtown and the beaches. The kitchen and the rest of the facilities were very clean. They had a great bar and braii facilities. The staff was very helpful with local activities to do and making reservations. Additionally, we had three young daughters with us and the staff was very mindful of their safety in the male/female dorm.

The hostel and location is great, and the staff are very friendly and go out of their way to help organise activities. I can only really say that you don't get the facilities worth your money, but having an on-site bar is a great feature. I would definitely recommend this hostel!
