I must say it was the best stay during my whole journey around the Japan... there may be some critics of this review, but I had a 'great escape' experience in this small place. The host was amazing even though spoke average English. A great animator, he took us on a hike to the top of Aso range and to nearby hills where we could take awesome photos early in the morning... place isn't in a walking distance from the station but frequent buses are available and drop you off just next to the hostel.
It's worth staying, value for money, the owner was very friendly and nice he took all guests to see the amazing scenary around mountains in the morning. There was no bathroom in this guesthouse but that was not a big deal, so many onsens nearby for reasonable price.
Access difficult ( no more bus after 19h30, 1 h of walk from the station ) but the area have some nice onsens and restaurant if you're not too demanding. Nice staff, the house is a little bit small.
