I've stayed in a lot of hostels in many different countries, and Asylum has been the most rowdy of them all with more drinking and partying than any other. I was a little uncomfortable occasionally, but I was surprised and satisfied with how the partying didn't last past 11:00.

Has very laidback vibe, staff are very friendly and upbeat which is great when youre hangover in the morning! Could always be cleaner, but I think is more because of the buildings age. The place looks good when cleaners have cleaned before the guests make the place dirty! If you don't join hostel events (BBQ and Thursday night party), it will be harder to meet people and like this hostel. I joined and was very happy!

4 functioning kitchen burners for over 100 guests, and very little cooking space, so don't try and cook too much! They charge for EVERYTHING - super inconvenient to have carry your dishes to and from your room because you've put a deposit down. Heaps of longstayers that take over the room. Room wasn't cleaned well. One toilet for the whole floor. But also a great atmosphere, easy to meet people, and awesome staff (especially Heidi!) so it's still fun!

Hi there, We're glad you still had fun despite the stuff you felt detracted from your stay! We have been working on getting the other set of burners set up for the last few days. Apologies for the state of the room, we have put in place a schedule to more closely monitor rooms to avoid situations like yours. Also, we do realize the dishes situation can be cumbersome, but its necessary to avoid previous theft and general messiness! If you have an alternative to this system, please tell us! Cheers

I had a really joyful experience while staying at this hostel, the staff were considerate and kind and straight away easy to get along with and were keen to check find out if there was anyway they could help me out with my touring or travel plans from and away from Cairns, to which is always handy. I would recommend this hostel for an affordable comfy place to staff with joyful staff.

This amazing backpacker hostel is a must if you travel the east coast solo, the place is basically designed for you to meet new cool people, who most likely loves the goon, gooning and gooners!! The place is awesome if you don't feel like spending a fortune on your accomodation or staying where you can't drink your own alcohol Also, shout out to Jens in reception, never before have I heard such an amazing German Bond Villain Accent! Cheers, Ronia

This place was disgusting. Dirt everywhere, awful location as it wasn't near anything and I saw waaayyyy to many bums n balls. Worst hostel I've stayed in

Paying for wifi? I don't think that's good for a hostel with backpackers who don't really want to spend money on that when you can get it for free most places.

Follow blog link below for full review. Stay here. That's all you need to know. Unless you aren't fun. Then don't stay here. The place is great - loads of fun and everyone is really social. The Pants Down Party is really fun (though the drinks that come with are half cordials) and you get pizza! A week of WiFi if you go to the party. I loved it here, wish I was staying longer. Not that close to the water, but easy walk to everything. http://www.howdareshe.org/hostel-review-asylum-cairns-cairn

Very good staff but the vibe is this hostel is hypster. The kitchen is not very clean and good and also you have to rent your kitchen equipment. The facilities are clean but very basique (bathroom and toilets). There is no locker in the room and the room are good enough to sleep. it's good for a couple days but not for a long stay.

This hostel has everything and more: -Clean kitchen area -Quiet, spacious dorm rooms -Swimming pool -All staff are really friendly -Social area that has free tea and coffee all day, with wifi. -Really easy to meet people -A 'pants down' social most Thursday's, which is cheap for what you get! Plus you get to make your own tshirt and have 7 days of wifi free if you sign up for the social. -Even if you're not looking to drink and stay up late every night (which you can with people every night if y

There were $4 BBQ party. It was great. But room was hot and there were ant in bed. So my friend was bit by it. It's 15 min far from market. It's shuttle service was good.

Thank you for your feedback. ANTS: While we have very strict policies in place with penalties for eating in rooms, it is very difficult to ensure NOBODY does it. HOT ROOM: It is important to keep windows open for air circulation with the fan on. However, the windows and door MUST be kept closed while airconditioner is running. We are glad that you enjoyed your BBQ dinner with us and we hope we will again have the opportunity to look after you when you return.

I loved asylum, and would never stay anywhere else in Cairns. The atmosphere is great, day and night. I've already returned once and hope to again.

Did not have aircondition and the fan was broken = super hot in the room. Otherwise i really likes our stay here!

Thank you for bring the malfuntion of the fan & airconditoner to our attention. It appears that the fan has a contact problem in its regulator and the airconditioner needed to be replaced. Both problems have been rectified, Kind regards
