I stayed for two nights and I find it kind of difficult to rate this hostel. Similar to a previous reviewer I found many "guests" awkwardly different from the type of persons I'm used to meeting at hostels. Most of them were male, seemed way older than me (I'm almost 30), and were definitely not "travelers". I didn't feel very comfortable at first and choose not to stay in the "occupied" common room. However, my impression changed when I met my "roomie" and other nice people at breakfast.

The staff were not nice and there were several folks actually living in the structure (not travellers). It became known to me that these people were living there because they were homeless and without anywhere else to stay, including a guy sleeping on the sofa in the lodge. In addition, really suspicious activities were going on at night, but I shall not comment further on those. Although the place was clean and of average appearance, this was by far the worst hostel I have ever been to.

Owner Comment (Show)
We are extremely sorry that we did not provide good service to this guests. WE have 6 people working here and all try to help whatever we can, from providing information around the town to carrying luggage when needed. Apparently, we did not do a good job with this guest. We believe that our guests are nice. At this particular time when this guest was staying with us, we had a group of 15 volunteers staying here. The rest was from all over the world, from China, India, Italy, USA etc. We don't understand where the homelessness was from. We are located in a very nice residential area which will not allow certain group of people hanging around. Our license would be in jeopardy if we truly have such group of homeless people staying here.

I don't know why and how this place has such a high rate and positive comments, but the place is a mess. It's falling apart. The toilet/showers alone were enough, and for the kind of money I paid that was super expensive for such a trashy place.

We take pride of this place and try our best to accommodate our guests. We appreciate the feedback from our guests, especially those that are constructive, which makes us better by correcting our mistakes or making improvements for the hostel. The facts are: 1. All the toilets were replaced by brand new and water efficiency ones over the winter. 2. Best Value Hostel in North America and Best Staff Awards by another main hostel booking engine. 3. Our cleaning crew do a superb job. The rooms are very clean.

This is a great hostel and one in which I would definitely stay again. The location is perfect; it's in a quiet residential neighbourhood, but just minutes away from the main tourist attractions. The dorms are nice and clean and most have a TV. There's a good sized kitchen and lounge and lots of computers that you can use for free. The free breakfast is basic, but for free, you can't complain!

Functionally the hostel was great other than a major contrast in shower temperature, that you had to work for to get right. Very friendly and helpful staff. However in comparison to the neighborhood surrounding the hostel, it seemed quite drab on the outside, and slightly rundown without any labelling saying it was in fact the hostel. Upon going inside, I came to much relief.

This hostel is conveniently located in the "Avenues" which is a quiet, safe, middle class neighborhood. I felt comfortable walking around there at night. The property is older, but it is kept very clean. The breakfast is good value especially since it's free. I stayed in an upstairs four bed dorm, and half of the time I had the room to myself. Some of the residents were longer term stay men and women, and all of them were polite and well-mannered. Overall I'd say it's good value.

Owner Comment (Show)
We appreciate the comments and having the opportunity to respond. Overall, we believe that we are doing a good job and our guests are happy with our service. We have many repeat guests. Some of them make reservation months ahead. However, once in a while we have unhappy guests especially when we are busy and need to move people around in order to accommodate all of our guests. Anyways, following is our response: 1) Unsafe facility: No light in emergency stairwell: All the hall way and stairwell are well lit. Broken plumbing: We fixed the problem in a timely manner. 2) Unregulatable shower temperature: wild swings from cold to SCALDING. The other guests do not seem to have that problem. 3) Arcing light switch: We checked and there is no such a problem. 4) Poor ocation for skiing guests. Advertised travel time on public transit much longer than stated. It does take a while to get to the ski slope if you miss the ski bus. 5) Not available on Sundays. Yes. There are Sunday bus to ski resort as well. 6) Only one bus per day, forcing short ski day. That is true for all the hotels. 7) Poor room lighting: We use two 60 W Florence light bulbs for small rooms. 8) Cold rooms: Sorry we did have some cold nights. However, we did provide extra electric heating units 9) Heater register fallen off wall. Sorry that the thermostat was loose. We had it fixed. 10) Limited kitchen hours in morning: We close the kitchen for about 45 minutes so we can clean the kitchen. We do have another kitchen for guests to use when one is being cleaned. 11) Broken TV two days: The TV was not broken. We do need to have better instructions for guests to use so they know how to operate a TV. 12) No early check-out w/o key loss: Guests can check out any time of the day or night. This particular guest was able to check out at 3 AM. We try our best to accommodate our guests. We know such a comment could be damaging to our business. We are truly sorry that we had to move the guest in the middle of his stay to a room with a twin bed due to another reservation demanded a queen sized bed. We will try hard to make our guests stay more pleasant.

Hostel is SPARKLING CLEAN. Beds are comfortable, linens are fresh, eggs for breakfast, homey, comfortable, lg lounges w/sofas, chairs, TV, tapes, books. Approx 5 mi from airport; 1 mi from Temple Sq. Parking lot + parking on the street. Couldn't ask for better. Be aware that this hostel accepts men and women in life transition situations -- this is not exclusively a backpacker/world traveller hostel.

I booked it at the last minute since the hostel I reserved canceled my reservation on the day before I arrived. So I really didn`t have any choice except this one. When I first got there, staffs were very nice and they seemed friendly. But I found out a lot of people staying there were actually living there. It wasn`t a big problem for me but I had to pay if I wanted a blanket and towel. I brought my own towel but forgot my blanket so I slept in a bed without blanket in the winter.

What do you want for $17? The mattresses were shot, the room was hot but it was clean, the coffee was strong and the nieghborhood is great. I need a place to crash for 1-2 nights a week while I am in culinary school and the price is right and I can hang out and study during the day. The usual cast of characters you expect to find staying at a hostel, I did not feel it was sketchy at all. Will probably stay there again due to the price.
