Liked the free computer access but unimpressed by the lack of cleanliness in the kitchen

Good accommodation. Good security on the front door but the lack of locks on the dorm doors was a bit disconcerting.

The pictures that you originally see when you book the hostel do not represent it at all. The kitchen was tiny and complimentary breakfast was not allocated properly. There were barely enough cups/plates to accommodate everyone. All the showers were broken, the attachment used to hold the shower head up was coming out of the wall. There was a tiny window in our room, clearly not sufficient for a 8 people dorm and mould was starting to gather at the edges of the window.

Extremely great value for money. The staff are both very warm and helpful and the ambience of the hostel was great. Perfect for larger groups, definitely recommend!!

Good hostel, not far from the centre, and actually very cheap. Plus, Damon is a top bloke and was really helpful the whole time !

Having read some of the reviews before booking my stay I was a little apprehensive about my stay at Backpackers Newcastle. I didn’t expect too much but was blown away by my time there and I was only there one night. The hostel is a small independent hostel and not a big chain company. I think it’s only 26 beds. Most of the hostels I've stayed in have been in the region of 100+. The guy running the place, Damon was a fountain of knowledge and way better than the city guide. Super helpful guy!

A very poor hostel. We were invited into the reception which was full of junk and hardly welcoming. We were tild that they didn't give room keys out to guests and if we wanted to leave and for the door to be locked, we had to knock on the managers room to ask them to lock it. We obviously did the as we were not prepared to leave our room unlocked. we returned from our night out to find that our room had not in fact been locked at all. We were extremely dissapointed.

Really poor experience. At the arrival the only guy working there treated us as if he were doing as a favour just by talking to us. He didn't even know how many people were supposed to stay in what room. There's NO security whatsoever, with just a door with a code number at the entrance and no keys or lockers in the rooms!! Insane. The duvets were covered in filth, by the way. I've been in quite a few good, average and bad hostels, but this one was just surreal.

Everything was fine in the hostel, though the bell appeared not to be working the first day I was there, preventing my checkin by about 8 hours. It was quite clean, had some nice & cheerful decorations & lots of flyers about things to do off the beaten track. The showers had fantastic water pressure, though the toilets had a very strange chemical smell. The person in charge while I was there was friendly, though she mentioned that another of the employees wrote positive reviews as if a guest.

Everything was very good except that there was no hot water in the tap. It was a bit inconvenient in the cold winter. Apart from that, we enjoyed our stay there.

Bedroom doors don't lock!!! Only one secured storage place & it's a pain to access. Guy that ran the place counted in £100 as our deposit in front of us (which wasn't mentioned as being required anywhere) and we only got given £90 back on departure. No apology given. Not impressed.
