this is a 'retreat' and as such it has no amenities (no shops nearby etc), unless you drive a car it won't be 'fun'. It has a lot of character and amazing sea views. maybe not good for solo travellers who don't drive their own car (bus station exists but has no sign and the bus is not very often and its no fun wiating for it in an unmarked bus station...)

We only stayed one night at Balintraid, but we had time to discuss with Anita. She was very welcoming and helpful. Her advices allowed us to make the most of our vacation. The bed were confortable and the room spacious. Thank you!

What an amazing hostel, and our host Anita even better! I have never seen such a clean hostel kitchen. Anita was very friendly and helpful, and went more than the extra mile. We really appreciate our stay at Balintrade house which left us with very happy memories, on a memorable day.

The place is beautiful! you can wake up and go and view the ocean, the owner is really nice and lovely. just keep in mind that the hostel is about an hour away from inverness, and costs between 5-6 pounds one way by buss

This is a really nice hostel. Yes, it's out of the way, but the view is amazing and the rooms spacious. Anita is great and very helpful with local attractions and such. My only criticism is the lack of a common room, which was a bit disappointing (meeting others is why I backpack!). I would definitely recommend the Balintraid for anyone needing peace and quiet and/or a bit of a break from the madding crowd. PS, eat at the Shandwick Inn. Trust me.
