The location seem to be nice because you are close to the center but in fact you are not in a really safe area. A little bit scaring in the evening. The security and cleanliness can be improve. The dorm are completely open all the time. The kitchen was really dirty. The good point is that the staff is friendly and helpful.

you get what you pay for,although the location is great ,10 mins walk to the beach,the hostel is very run down and is a little on the dirty side, the staff are friendly though.poor security and cramped 10 bed dorms(too many beds in a small space).decent enough to chill for a few days if you're not fussed

the staff is not friendly, the location itselfs is great but you can't go out alone, the bathrooms are stinky and it has not the feeling of a cool backpackers - i changed the backpackers (to tekweni), which was great!

I didn't end up staying at the banana backpackers because my interactions with Toni online were very unprofessional and very unwelcoming. I stayed at the happy hippo hostel which was a much better fit for us.

Muy buena gente atendiendo, muy amable, siempre dispuestos a solucionar algun problema, desde adaptadores a los enchufes, hasta pedirnos comida por teléfono debido a limitantes de idioma. Hermosa estadía, el ambiente de quienes se hospedaban muy bueno.

It's situated in downtown Durban, which gets totally emptied when it gets dark (around six-seven), and we were told by hostel staff that we couldn't go anywhere in the area when it's dark. They didn't even want us to wait for the cab outside the hostel at 7.30 pm. But it's near the beaches and good shopping. You'll just have to take a taxi at night to other areas of town if you wanna go out and eat or to a bar/club. They don't accept creditcards.
